Over The Edge Page 2 NEWS April 7, 1998 Pride Parade A Success By Marki Sellers On Saturday, September 5th Prince hosted its second annual Prince George Pride Parade. Approximately 100 members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered com- munity, along with their allies, took to the streets celebrating and raising awareness of queer issues in Prince George. The parade began at 11 am at the civic cen- tre and proceeded through the downtown core to Fort George Park. MLA Tim 7th and Quebec @ the simon, fraser inn saturday Pinkanher 19th Stevenson spoke at a pep rally prior to the parade, along with organizers, about the courage involved it, participating in ~ this parade and the need for such events to take place. While the gay, les- bian, bisexual and transgendered com- munity has seen many legislative changes recently regarding the recognition of their human rights they still suffer discrimination and harassment in many areas of society. The parade was fol- lowed up by a rally at Fort George Park, with guest speakers includ- ing Paul Ramsey, Lois Boone, Tim Stevenson, and even a representative from the Northern Undergraduate Student Society, Marki Sellers. A number of performing acts took to the stage until mid afternoon and a dance was held at the Multicultural Centre later Saturday night. Allin all the day was a success, both in rais- ing awareness and creating a safe envi- ronment for all people to feel welcome. Calling for Nominations By Nicole Larson The University Senate is inviting the UNBC Community to submit nominations for Honorary Doctoral Degrees and for the bestowal of the title of Friend of the University for Northern British Columbia. These awards will be present- ed at the 1999 Spring Convocation. Honorary Doctoral Degrees will be given to a people who deserve recognition for their distinguished achievement in schol- arship, research, teach- ing, creative arts, public service, or of significant contribution to the life of the University, the province, the nation or the world. Friend of the University of Northern British Columbia awards will be given to people who deserve recognition for their dis- tinguished achieve- ment in scholarship, research, teaching, cre- ative arts, public ser- vice, or of significant contribution to the life of the University of Northern British Columbia. Up to three of each award will be given. Past recipients have included local businessman Tom Steadman. To nominate someone for either the Honorary Doctoral Degrees or the Friend of the University of Northern British Columbia awards you have to provide some informa- tion about the nomi- nées. The name and current address of the nominee has to be pro- vided. A curriculum vitae or other such doc- umentation that can be provided at the time of the nomination, lists of publications, specific achievements or other related material that would be of use to the committee should be included with the nomi- ‘nation. A brief state- “ment outlining why the nominee should be considered for this honor would also be helpful to the senate committee reviewing the nominations.
