The Quarter-Master’s store, of
which my father had charge, included
a large warehouse holding stores of
clothes and equipment, besides food
in great quantity, all of which were
supplied not only to the barracks but
to outlying detachments, which took
their orders from “A” Division. The
main barracks building was of con-
siderable size, built in the shape of a
T, one wing of which formed the
sleeping quarters for unmarried
N.C.O.’s and constables. The black

iron beds were placed along the wall,
each man’s personal belongings and
small equipment being kept in boxes
under his bed and on shelves above it.

and across the hall, in the opposite
wing, was the recreation room, with
billiard tables, small writing tables,
etc. The men spent many hours there,
reading, writing and playing pool. In
one corner was the canteen, where
they could buy candy, magazines and
smokes, and beer was on sale at
certain hours—this was drunk from
pint-size schooners. There was also a
mess room. ‘

The kitchen always had a fat, well-
fed looking cook, who was assisted
by a few constables or trustees.

The bathroom in the barracks was
equipped with a number of white
enamelled wash-basins, filled by dip-
per from a barrel of water. The bath
itself was a huge iron tub, under
which was a small stove. When the
prospective bather got the water hot
enough, he climbed in, and enjoyed a
good soak, which must have been ex-
tremely welcome after a long trip in
the saddle.
