What better time to issue that invitation, than Advent/Christmas? The life of the Church is a series of celebrations. By participating in these celebrations we are actually given all that we need to become whole, and we are given the formulas to make whole every human experience. The first of these great celebrations is Christmas, for which the season of Advent is a preparation. Advent begins the Church’s year. In the dead of winter, against a I would like to thank all those who made 1988 a success for my business. Have a Merry Xmas and a Slappy Mew Year Debbie Kethler Tupperware Regal Dealer See OTS money into during Advent. This money will be sent to Mother Theresa, Missionaries of Charity. t t T We begin another season of Advent on November 27. Advent has two main stages. During the first two weeks, we look forward to the coming of Jesus Christ our Saviour at the end of time. In the final weeks we turn more to remembering his coming at the first Christmas. Advent is a season of hope, joy and anticipation. Great artists have given us symbols and signs that help us get ready and mark the steps in our Advent jour- ney. THE ADVENT WREATH - A crown or circle is used as a sign of eternity. No beginning, no end. The crown or circle is covered with evergreen boughs, a sign of hope. On this four candles are placed (tradition- ally, three purple and one rose coloured). First Week of Advent - light one purple candle Second Week- two purple candles, are lit Third Week (Holy Name Sunday)- —_ two purple and one rose candle are lit Fourth Week - all four candles are lit The light is reminding us that Jesus, the light of the world, is coming. THE JESSE TREE - A bare tree with no leaves is used. Sunday after Sunday, symbols tell us of the great people of the Old Testament who hoped, prepared and an- nounced the coming of the Messiah. PERSON or EVENT SYMBOLS USED Creation sun, world, Noah’s Ark Patriarchs Abraham’s tent, Joseph’s coat backdrop of short days, long nights, the absence of the sun and the sleep of nature, Advent teaches us about the first of the great mysteries - waiting. Like fields waiting for the spring planting, humans spend this time of year waiting for the sun to come back. Into this period of life the Church brings the Festival of Light, an ancient at- tempt to bring the sun back. We use the Advent Wreath - each Sunday lighting one more candle and allowing the light to slowly come back into our lives. We refuse to celebrate Christmas until the evening of December 24, be- cause we recognize that waiting is an important part of life and we can’t rush the return of the sun and light into our lives. We are people of instant gratification. We want to do things NOW and so we have Concorde jets and in- stant coffee. We roll out green plastic and call it turf. The more life calls us to wait, the more anxiously we hurry. But because waiting will always be with us, the Church’s first lesson is the importance of learning this art. We still have to wait for the sun to return, for the snow to melt and the buds to break. We still have to wait for the birth of a child. In the Church at this season, we wait for the birth of God/Man and the light which this brings into our lives. Nothing of value comes into being without a period of quiet waiting. It seems like impractical time, wasteful, and good for nothing, but it is mysteriously necessary to life. A healthy baby, a loving relationship, a reconciliation, a work of art: all come about only after a period of incubation. The truly meaningful marriage of God with human life likewise comes only after a period of waiting. For Christians, a meaningful Christmas comes AUTHORIZED CAN COM FULL SERVICE DISTRIBUTORS Wish Everyone Happy Holidays and a “aif P te a oe 1 RE SS es ree % Spire: z 2 2, PQODSS SIS Ie sete “x FOROS FSO SS SSS BOSS SOS IS SSCL Cassiar Courier December 1988 Page 5 Moses - 10 Commandments Manna - basket of bread David - harp; Solomon - crown Isaiah - scroll; Ezekiel - angel Wisdom - book; David - key Hand of Blessing - sceptre Holy Spirit - dove; Trinity - triangle Mary - woman with baby; Wise Men, Shepherds, Lambs, Camels As we remember these people of hope, we also become Covenant Ancestors of Jesus Prophets “OQ” Antiphons Coming of Jesus more eager for his coming. Rediscovering It is a time of the cycle of the Church’s celebrations can mean making our life whole. We welcome everyone into All Saints Church. Why not make your return this Christmas? May the wait- ing bring you wholeness, and may the twelve days of _ Christmas be especially joyful for you and your family this year. t t t The life of the Church is based in service, and we at All Saints have sought for some time a vehicle by which we could better serve Cassiar. After much thought we have decided that what we can do best is to offer Chris- tian Education. Beginning on Monday, January 9 at 6 we will be presenting our Kid’s Club, an hour of Chris- tian based activities and lessons for kids from ages 5 to 12. This is purposely placed to coincide with the Catholic Catechism Classes, a time when there is little other acti- vity going on.
