A bog is an area of wet, spongy ground with soil composed mainly of decayed vegetation. A B.O.G., however, is quite another thing. Each university in the Province of British Columbia has a Board of Governors, and that includes UNBC. The University Act of B.C. gives the Board of Governors ‘BOG) a wede range of powers and responsibilities that include che management and administra- ion of the University. The Board is responsible for the property, rev- enue, expenditures and business affairs of UNBC. In that capac- ity, they have the final decision on the hiring of all staff and faculty from the President and Vice-Presi- dents to the sessional instructors and administrators. The BOG has final approval on the university budget, and is therefore respon- sible for determining and collect- ing fees for items that range from tuition to parking and library fines. What’s A B.O.G.? What Comprises a BOG? The BOG is comprised of 15. members, including both the Presi- dent and the Chancellor of the University. The remaining mem- bers include two faculty members, elected byt he faculty; one em- ployee of the university, elected by university employees; two stu- dents, elected by the student body; and eight others appointed by the Lieutenant Governor. Our two stu- dent representatives on the Board of Governors are Lee O’Callaghan and Reg Kao. Lee O’Callaghan joined the Board in January. Lee is a second year Marketing student who at- tended Port Moody Secondary prior to coming to UNBC. While living in Coquitlam, Lee was very sports oriented, playing rugby, football and lacrosse. Since com- ing to Prince George, however, Lee has taken to indoor activities including Kung-fu and playing Toni Fletcher guitar...along with concentrating on his studies, of course. Reg Kao is in his second term as a student representative on the Board of Governors. Reg, also from the Lower Mainland, is a third year International Business student. In addition to his studies and the Board, Reg is a member of the Timberwolves football club.
