“he treasure seekers—At left is Mr. and Mrs. New, Joyce and the new baby in the basket: ouring rain didn’t improve our pirits. We saw a couple of moose, heard ne wolf and also saw grizzly bear racks about a foot in diameter. “hank heaven we didn’t actually see grizzly as our guns were not suff- iently powerful to take a chance of rounding one of the brutes. OLD TIMER GOT DISGUSTED Murphy (74 years of age) was etting completely disgusted with the thole set-up, not to mention Bon- er and myself swearing and falling round, with the prospect of waiting whole month for transportation ack home. One late afternoon Murphy sat n the ground and stated that there e was staying until morning. I decided to walk ahead a bit to \ok for some shelter. I finally ran across a fairly decent ‘ail and eventually came to a clear- 1g with a comfortable home in the ntre of it. I walked slowly toward the house nd peered in the window. You can imagine my surprise at eing a young couple enjoying a ice hot dinner. The wife gave a ight scream when she looked to- ard the window and saw a wet ewhiskered face looking in at them. The couple were George and Mrs. lew. They quickly invited me in and ave me the best meal of my whole NATIONAL CAFE A Good Cate to Serve You When in Pouce Coupe WE SERVE GOOD MEALS Open from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. POUCE COUPE BRITISH COLUMBIA IINETEENTH EDITION life; not to mention warm dry clothes. George and I went back for Murphy and Bonner, so we had our first dry sleep for several nights. We were the first visitors that George had in the 12 years that he lived in the Anzac. A day or two later we headed for the hills again. On the second night out about midnight I awakened my companions to tell that the knife-like pains in my chest were unbearable and that I was practically frozen. Bonner heated some salt and put it on my chest and Murphy got the fire blazing. They took turns in staying awake to see that the sparks from the fire didn’t ignite my sleeping bag. I was in a sitting position and couldn't stand up or lie down. I stayed this way for three days and three nights until I could get back to George's house. After a week and a half I was strong enough to travel so George brought us down as far as Davie Lake. We had lost about 25 pounds each from our experience. After four weeks in the hospital I began to plan another trip but with George New as captain next time we go. ese eae FOR RESULTS Advertise in The Shoulder Strap The Official Magazine of The British Columbia Provincial Police Oliver Farm Equipment POUCE COUPE Fort St. John Lumber CO.
