I put thesee words down sO our young people can learn and understand their cultural inheritance, which _ has been a part of this land for many, mapy generations. If the young people understand this, they may understand themselves and others better. When they - do this, there is a chance all people can live together in peace and harmony. ve the young people say today, “Tam a Thal- tan”, or “I am a Tlingit”, they do not know what that ‘means when they say it. It is important they know, or else it will all be lost, forever. First I will tell my story of. life in the Cassiar coun- try for 74 years. Then we will talk of the iustonye: and _ legends of the Indian people. I was born in Atlin, B.C. in 1903. In those days, people were very superstitious, Babies could not be born in houses, so I was born in a little 8’ x 10° tent bet- *. ween two houses. My brother Henry was born five years earlier in 1898, the year of the Pine Tree Creek gold discovery when. there were 10,000 people living in Atlin. The first white child ever born in Atlin was born one month before Henry. His name was Frank J. Hennings, and he still lives today in Vancouver. My father.s name was ‘“Che-kay”, which is our word for the call of a small brown bird. When the white men heard the name, they called him Jack. They called him, “Taku Jack”, because he was from the Taku River area, He was the Chief of the Tlingits in Atlin for 32 years. After he died, my brother Henry was Chief. When he passed away, my nephew Edward Jack became ‘Chief, and he is Chief today. I am the Chief Counselor for the Tlingits. Sometimes in dis- cussions’ or troubles, the people say to me, “What are ‘you butting in here for?’?, and I must say, “T have to, for I am the Chief Counselor”. continued on page 2 In Nae iSSUE...
