STANLEY
by Sara E. Emler, Grade 3

A long time ago there were no houses, so people
lived in caves. Stanley lived in a cave, but he did
not like it. The cave was cold and Stanley was
cold. His head hurt because he had to sleep with
it on a rock. Bats flew around as though they own-
ed the place. ‘‘Why can’t we find a better way to
live?”’ asked Stanley. “‘This is good enough for
us’, said the other cavemen. ‘‘Why isn’t it good
enough for you?” That following day Stanley
built himself a house and lived happily ever after
by himself.

THE TRAIN BELL

When I was a baby I cried because the train bell
rang so loud it woke me up. Now every time |
hear a bell ringing I remember the train.

DEASE LAKE HIGHWAY DISTRICT
Notice is given puruant to Section 9 (4) of the
Highway Act, that the Ministry has received an
application to discontinue and close a portion
of road allowance within the community of
Dease Lake, adjacent to Lot 27 of D.L. 1288,
Cassiar District.

And that such closed road allowance be vested
pursuant to Section 9 (2) (c) of the Highway
Act.

A plan showing the proposed road closure may
be viewed at the Dease Lake District office
during office hours. Any person having an
objection to this application for road closure
should do so in writing not later than Dec.

30, 1982.

the TV was on, too. The dog barked. That is what
it sounded like!

SOMEONE WITH NO NAME

Once upon a time there lived a someone that
didn’t have a name. He talked a lot so everyone
ignored him. He wanted a friend, but would not

stop talking. He went to a store, the store manag-

er asked the little boy what his name was. He
mumbled, so the store manager gave him a nam
and a friend.

PAY CHEQUE VERSUS
COMPENSATION CHEQUE

There can be safety programs for years. The
Plant can be covered with safety posters. Machin-
ery can be safely guarded. We can all be shown
the safe way to do our jobs. But, none of these
things will make us accident-free if we don’t want
to be. It is up to us. We must accept responsibility
for our own safety and not depend too much on
machine guards and our fellow workers.

Nearly everything we possess is in some way
connected with our ability to earn a living. The
Plant safety program helps us to keep on guard so
we can protect that ability. By working safely we
give ourselves security.

Accidents cost our company money. They
cost the workers money also. No compensation
cheque is as big as a pay cheque. Just imagine
how tough, how impossible it would be to pay
bills, to educate children, to buy a home, with
nothing to rely on but compensation cheques.

Accidents cause inefficiency. You cannot
have a smooth operating industry when accidents
keep interrupting the flow of work, taking skilled
and well trained people off the job.

Safety programs help us all stay on the job.
That means more money, more job security and
more production.
