Over The Edge Letters Response To The Editor by Dionne Olsen This letter is in response to the editorial in the October 30th, vol. 3, Issue 5 of Over The Edge. The opening statement of the editorial states that, "it’s time that this particular column got a little sarcastic”. Therefore I assume that the ensuring article will perhaps be an entertaining piece of satirical writing. Of course I was greatly mistaken. Nor could I call this piece of investigative reporting all the factual errors and assumptions. I was sorry to hear about how the sound system 2 If you’re 12 to 25 Cypress Airlines will fly you ata _ special one-way stand-by fare of ... “brought tears” to the writer’s eyes. Perhaps the writer should take that issue up with the appropriate people—the Education Media Services Department. However, when the writer had finished crying he stated that when he spoke with students after the speeches they “still did not know what the student society did for them”. Did this seemingly intelligent writer think to ask them why they did not ask any questions during the open forum. In regards to the comment about the lack of formal speeches by some of the electoral candidates, what was the point when they assumed the position by acclimation. The acclimated candidates were asked to stand up and introduce themselves. I was offended by the writer’s erroneous assumption that the “crowd that had assembled heard that the current NUGSS staff was not impressed with the number of new people running for positions”. However two sentences later he revised his position and rephrased it to read “ the accusation were made by various members of the board”. John Stevenson (Vice Chair) and John Roberson ( Ombudsperson) were two of the three board members who made comments about the lack of participation. Upon speaking with John Stevenson, he recalled to the best of his ability that he said, “I am disappointed in the participation level of the 4 November 13, 1996 elections, maybe because the students weren’t interested or don’t care”. John Robertson said, “I would like to thank those of you who came out. It is really nice to see that you care, I wish that you would have brought more friends”. Perhaps I was missing an integral part of their speeches, but I did not perceive an attack on the students who took time out of their busy schedules to attend the speeches. The comments seemed more like opinions concerning students who were not in attendance and were not interested in voting. Nor did I once see the as a collective accuse the crowd of students apathy or lack of participation. Brenda Haggerty was the third board member who made comments about her acclimated position. However it appears in the article that “why are people complaining that there is no competition?
