Wild and Rowdy

Boone Helm, the last man referred
to, was born in Kentucky about the
year 1828. His parents were illiterate
and young Helm grew up in turn
without schooling. When he was a
child, the family moved west of the
Mississippi into Missouri, and in his
teens he was a wild and rowdy
character. He could ride as soon as he
could walk. He was never without a
weapon, and he was an expert knife
thrower. He could drive the blade of
his knife into the ground from his
horse, and turning round stoop over
and retrieve it at a gallop. On one
occasion when he heard the sheriff
was looking for him, he rode his
horse up the court-house steps and

into the court-room. He said he
wanted to know what the judge
wanted him for.

In 1848 he got married, but aban-
doned his wife a year later. It was
just at the time when news of rich
gold strikes in California stirred the
imagination, and Helm planned on
going to California with a man named
Littlebury Shoot. Maybe Shoot
thought that Helm was too wild a
character to travel with, and he
backed out of the agreement at the
last minute. It was the last decision
Shoot was to make, for, in a fit of
rage Helm whipped out his Bowie
knife and killed Shoot. Mounted on a
fast horse Helm made good his
escape into the Nations country
Here he was found in an Indian
camp and returned to Munro County,
Missouri, for trial. Feigning insanity,
he was adjudged insane. A few weeks
later he escaped from the confinement
