POLLUTION ABATEMENT - 1970 to 1977 Prior to 1970, the only Provincial Legislation respect- ing the environment as applicable to Cassiar's operations was: a) Health Act, 1960. b) Mines Regulation Act, 1967. c) Pollution Control Act, 1967. ‘Of these, only the Mines Regulation Act had a specific bearing on Mine-milling operations. This Act did not include the specific Regulations or Objectives now associated with the Pollution Control Act, 1967. The Pollution Control Act, 1967, required registration of discharges of comecienants by January 1970 >(for these onto land and into water), and by January 1971 for those ee air. This registration was in effect a preliminary to Application for Permit. Although some data had been gathered prior to 1970 on pollution from the Cassiar operation, it has only been in the present decade that monitoring equipment has been developed to more fully evaluate pollution levels. Within this same period improved pollution control equipment has also become available to reduce pollutant discharges to lower levels than had previously been possible. Experimental programs were developed at the Cassiar site. Two particularly notable achievements were the
