Soke We tao Aes Pn re kee 66 Page 4 April-1988 Cassiar, Couriers. +> o=-* The play offs and another year of local men’s hockey was completed on March 17th. The last game of the year was a fast skating style of game that had all the elements of good hard hockey up until the end of the second period. At that point an incident arose from the game that led to some questions that could not be resolved. The questions that need to be addressed during the off season should include the following: (a) an exact interpretation of what is a fight so that referees know when to call it and feel they must make the call. (b) do the referees, who are in control of the game, have the right to change their calls whether it be for a goal or penalty? (c) does the executive have the right or responsibility to change decisions by referees after a game? The above are all controversial debate type questions and given that time was limited, they will have to be discussed under the sunny skies at places such as Chain Lakes during the summer. Yahooo! At this point the Cassiar Blues should be congratulated for having a good season, winning the league championships and the one game play off final. Final stats will be out in time for the awards banquet which is booked for Saturday April 16th at the Rec Centre. Details on the banquet wiil be forth coming. Thanks to Brian Lundale for doing most of the work organizing this event. The last article for the Senior Men’s hockey will include all the team and individual award information - May issue. — NEXT MEETING 7:30 p.m. TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION: concerns immediately! C. What kind of an eater are YOU? ON THE GO. You eat away from home more than most people. You consume lots of dairy products, especially yogurt, cheese and butter. You avoid the sweets and prefer whole grains. But your intake of vegies, beans and fruits is below average. MEAT EATERS. This is the traditional meat- and-potatoes group. You prefer meat - mostly beef - for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Unfortunately, you also eat lots of eggs, sausage, TV dinners and hot dogs. If this is your style, you’re getting too much fat and cholesterol. “ALL MIXED UP”. You have a habit of skipping meals. Then you often eat away from home, or choose convenience foods - TV dinners, frozen potpies, bacon, cake mixes, presweetened cereals, donuts, cookies, candy, chips, and pop. In other words, lots of junk food. Your diet needs the most improvement of any group. CONSCIENTIOUS EATERS. Home is usually where you eat. You’ve trained yourself away from some bad habits: you eat lower levels of high cholesterol foods, red meats, salt and processed food, and more than the average amounts of beans, nuts and whole grains. Your diet probably needs more fruit and vegies though. HEALTHY EATERS. You eat the most fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Good for you. Like the conscientious eaters, you’ve reduced your consumption « of high-fat, high cholestrol foods, sweets and red meat. HOCKEY “HICKS” * A new ritual in hockey dressing rooms is the pregame shampoo of the hockey helmet! * In Cassiar, tubed skates are still in style! * Dressing room windows are good pop coolers! * Would Cassiarites support their own phone in and talk to the players “Hockey Talk Show’’?? Just kidding Morgy! * Between coaching and playing, some local guys are at the rink almost every single night!! WOW! . . . s > « Instead you choose chicken, turkey, and fish. . You eat lots of canteloupe, bananas, whole wheat breads, broccoli, carrots and cucumbers. Keep it up. WORST WEIGHT LOSS IDEAS Here are some things to avoid when trying to lose weight. Fasting . . On a regular basis it is unhealthy and may cause accelerated weight gain once you resume normal eating. One-food diets . . Eating nothing but bananas _ OF yogurt or whatever 1s bad advice. ‘here is no magical fat-burning foods. Pills. . . appetite suppressants, diuretics, etc. . . Sooner or later you'll realize you prefer food. A second cocktail or glass of wine. Skipping breakfast... . A regular morning meal may help control binging before bedtime. Oversized shirts and baggy pants. Impatience. . . A slow but sure: pace is best for long-lasting results. Croissants. . . Starts your day with about 150 calories, mostly saturated fat and very little energy. Tartar sauce, butter, mayonnaise and other high fat add-ons. Gourmet ice cream. Dieting without exercise. EXERCISE VS. DIET When you’re trying to lose weight, remember the advantages of exercising compared to dieting. 1. Exercise burns calories while you’re working out. 2. Exercise speeds up metabolism-your body burns calories at a higher rate than if you had not exer- cised. 3. By contrast, dieting without exercise slows down your metabolism-the body’s baseline rate of burning calories-by about 20%. This means that while you’re eating less, you’re burning calories at a slower than normal rate. 4. Exercise builds and preserves muscles, while it burns body fat. 5. Following a very low-calorie diet plan of less than 800 calories a day may cause muscle loss; a conser- vative estimate is one pound of muscle lost for every three of fat. 7. Exercise allows you to eat more, and still maintain a weight loss. 8. Dieting can make you irritable, but exercise gives you more energy and decreases stress. 9. Exercise can be a lot mcre fun than dieting. 10. Exercise directly fights the diseases of obesity- high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.
