they look to the present, he looks to the future and he sees the pro- mise of possibility dawning on the morrow. He has no fear of the future because he is dedicated to the philosophy of change, growth, and progress. He knows that todays stability is tomorrows imbalance. Only by setting progressively higher goals will he maintain the momentum to challenge and overcome that im- balance and lead others toward ac- cepting tomorrow as a hope not a fear. A leader of men will understand that although all men were created equal, they were also created with the ability to become unequal. He WANTS his followers to become unequal. He resolves that they will become unequal in timidity, in conformity, in mediocrity. He vows that they will rise to the challenge of the future, as he does, rather than conm- placently and fearfully accepting that which is. He knows that to achieve these ends he must hammer out the solid foundation of individual- ism on which succeeding generations will stand. Influential and res- ponsible leadership requires en- lightenment in many areas, and it must spark the flame of enlighten- ment in the lives of others. To do less is to abandon man's gravest responsibility - that of making the road a little easier and a little brighter for those that follow. In all human affairs there are efforts, and there are results. And the measure of the result is usually the strength of the effort. Chance does not exist for the man who is determined. Fate is merely a foible to be disregarded. The visions that you glorify in your mind, the ideals that you en- throne in your heart...these you will build your life by; these you will become. Are there any of us who has not a wife, a husband, a son or a daughter, a lover or a friend? According to the dictionary, a per- son is considered mature when he or she has reached full physical and mental development. From my point of view, that's a fine definition only as it applies to our physical development. As you know, it's relatively easy to discern when we've reached our full physical height. As for our phy- sical width, that’s something many of us try to control throughout most of our lives! But measuring our mental develop- ment is something else again. This is not so easy to define or to pin- point. For what it's worth, 1 recently came across a definition of maturity that you may wish to consider. While lengthy for a definition, it contains a lot of. food for thought that may prove helpful in analyzing your own men tal development. x k& & Maturity ts many things. First, it is the ability to base a judgment on the big picture, or the long haul so to speak. It means being able to pass up the fun-for-the- minute and select the course of action which will pay off later. Maturity is the ability to stick with a project until it is com pleted, or to stick with a diff- {cult situation until finally resolved. 22
