This new evidence was investigated by Chief Constable E. Gammon and Constable Munro and was found to have no bearing on the case whatsoever. In fact Constable Munro had questioned this man Vol- ka Nicolich alias Mike Kitselas at the time of the murder but could find no reason to detain him in connection with the case. Upon Canada’s entrance into the First World War a great need was felt for men of experience in rock and tunnel work to serve overseas in the ranks of the Canadian Engineers. This condition became so aggravated that inmates of prisons who had ex- perience in this line of work were granted a full pardon on the provi- sion they serve their country on the battlefields of Europe.
