This did not prevent him from gazing out of the small window and watching the traffic pass up and down the mighty Yukon River, a sight which considerably brightened his lonely station. This day he noted that one of the many sternwheel steamers then in operation had passed on its way up-river. Also, on the far side of the river a small row- boat had drifted down stream with three men in it. He paid very little attention to the small boat and its occupants, but just filled his pipe and went on listening to the wire hum- ming. About two hours later he was rudely awakened from his reveries when two women and a young man O*> CLEAR fine day in June, F.T.S. LIMITED FIREWORK DISPLAYS HARRIS PAINT BRUSHES DEVRY 16 mm. All three of the visitors seemed in a very excited state of mind, and the two women at least were both talking at once. The young man remained silent but it was easy to see that he was in a very nervous condition. It took Hall a moment or two to grasp what all the excitement was about, but finally he elicited the fact from one of the women, that the man before him, a young Swede, had been shot in the head by one of his part- ners. Now Hall took stock of the young Swede carefully, and he noted that he was standing in his stockinged feet and holding his boots in his hands. Taking a closer look at him, he also found a large protuberance at the back of his right ear where it was evident that a bullet still lodged. The women clamored for Hall to telegraph for the Mounted Police at once, but Hall thought it best to get more details first, so he asked the young Swede to tell his story. THE SHOULDER STRAP — TWENTY-THIRD EDITION * When the Swede got started talking he couldn’t stop, and although he was still visibly shaken and spoke in rather a disjointed fashion, Hall was able to gather the following facts:— The young fellow had recently come North to the Yukon with two other men whom he had met in Seattle. One of these men was about his own age and also of his nationality whom he had met in a beer parlor. The second man was quite elderly, had heard them conversing together, and suggested that he also go along with them, as he had been to the far north before. They therefore formed a partnership, although the old man appeared to be practically broke. Arriving at Lake Bennett they either purchased or built a rough row- boat to continue down the Yukon Dawson, Wade & Co. LIMITED GENERAL CONTRACTORS * 775 Clark Ave. - Phone HA 2800 VANCOUVER B.C.
