16 February 23, 2011 + Over the Edge Best Ads of Super Bowl XLV The best of the best BROCK CAMPBELL SPORTS EDITOR After all the hype, constant team analysis, endless stories about adversity, and terrible performances by even more terrible pop-stars, the Super Bowl has once again come and gone and the only thing left to discuss now is the advertisements. With airtime being sold at a hundred thousand dollars a second, ads shown during the game are becoming fixtures of American pop-culture just as much as the Super Bowl itself, if not more. Budweiser’s ‘Clydesdale horses’ and E-Trade’s ‘talking baby’ are just as recognizable as Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. Granted Super Bowl XLV between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers did have its moments, Rodgers three-hundred four passing yards for three touchdowns is being compared to other great Super Bowl performances by a QB, and Roethlisberger had his chance to win it late for the Steelers but Pittsburgh eventually gave the ball up on downs sealing it for the Packers, 31-25. But more importantly who had the best Super Bowl commercial? Here’s a rundown of the best of Super Bowl XLV, if you haven’t checked them out already. Best Car Ad Some candidates for this category include Chevy Camaro’s parody of typical automobile commercials that show the car racing through unrealistic scenes, also the Audi ad that showed the A8 as the only escape from the confines of luxury that had aristocrats escaping a high-class prison with Kenny G as entertainment. But the top car ad definitely goes to Volkswagen’s ‘little Darth Vader’, which featured a mini Darth failing to use the force on household items such as the laundry machine or the family dog. Until his dad helps him out by starting the car with his remote starter. The commercial has had over 25 million hits on You-Tube. Best Beer Ad As a major sponsor Budweiser is the only candidate for best beer ad. It’s best one being the one where a rugged saloon broke out into a rendition of Elton John’s ‘tiny dancer. Bud Light also mocked renovation shows by imitating the before and after segments with the only addition to a kitchen overhaul being a case of Bud Light, much to the delight of the husband and to the disappointment of the wife. Best Celebrity Appearance Several celebs made appearances including Eminem who had two spots, as well as Kim Kardashian who attributed her ‘assets’ to wearing Skechers. But the best celebrity appearance was Justin Beiber and Ozzy Osbourne’s cameo in the Best Buy ad, where Beiber while wearing a fake beard, made fun of his own girly features. Best Junk Food Dorito’s held a contest for consumer’s to submit their own ad with the best one’s being selected for the Super Bowl slot. One ad had a slow motion scene of a pug running for a dorito, which in all honesty is pretty funny. However, its top submission was the creepy co-worker who licked the fingers of fellow employees for the ‘best part’ of their chips. Other Notables “The Cliff” A Snowshoe Adventure UNBC Student Life Department Sponsors Snowshoe Event BROCK CAMPBELL SPORTS EDITOR The UNBC Student Life Department has joined forces with Prince George’s local hiking Club, the Caledonia Ramblers to host “The Cliff’, a snowshoeing trek for all UNBC students taking place March 5th at Forests for the World. There is no snowshoeing experience required and any students interested in participating are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. Snowshoeing has quickly become one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Ski and snowboard enthusiasts who use snowshoes in the backcountry to find all the fresh powder have popularized the sport. It is also a great alternative to cross-country running in the winter, for those runners who prefer to stay outside. The sport is relatively easy to learn, virtually inexpensive, snowshoes range anywhere from one hundred to three hundred dollars, and most importantly it is beneficial to a person’s health and fitness. Snowshoeing is believed to be a great way to burn calories, lose weight and improve cardiovascular fitness. Snowshoers can burn as much as six hundred calories per hour and burn forty-five percent more than walking or running at the same speed. As for “The Cliff’, equipment will be provided free of charge, however, there is a limited amount of snowshoes available. Participants must pre-register and gear is arranged on a first come first serve basis. Pre-registration will begin February 28th and continue until March 4" at the sign-up table located in the Agora hallway. When signing-up students will have to indicate their snowshoe size, which is based on weight ranges. Students taking part will meet at the Forests for the World parking lot at 9:00 am on March 5th. The hike, which is a beginner’s level (mostly flat terrain), loops from Forests of the World towards Blue Spruce Campgrounds near College Heights and back to UNBC. Participants are asked to bring water, extra food, and warm winter boots and clothing. Extra items such as whistle, backpack, binoculars, cell-phone and sunscreen are also encouraged. Sarah Foot, UNBC’s Student Life Coordinator, pointed out that “The Cliff’ is not a snowshoe clinic; however, first time snowshoers will be given a hand. Foot assured that, “We will E-trades talking baby made another classic appearance, this year he expressed his sentiment for his tailor who was retiring early with the help of E-trade. pssst! womyn and grrrls! you're invited to a safe space where you can learn about your monthly cycles, ways to stay healthy, alternative period- products-- and a whole lotta other stuff your mama £ the health nurse never told you about! :scarlet tide brigade: offers up some cool DIY resources {info to take home) AND be you can be RAD and make a PAD! Geocaching is an outdoor sporting activity in which participants use Global Positioning Systems or other navigational methods to locate “geocaches” or “caches” hidden throughout the world, it is essentially a high-tech game of hide and seek.
