hours in the glade. The ‘staging’ effect
would take only half an hour at most.

brought to the glade. It was improbable that
the murderer would leave the stripping of
the body until after his arrival in the glade;
when his work might be handicapped by
darkness and by the urge to leave the place

Again, he must have had some object in

“Only the watch,” Tuohey replied. “It
had cbviously been broken in the glade, be-
cause the pieces of glass which fitted the
face were found close to the girl’s body. On
examination of the face-casing, I found two
tiny marks on each side directly opposite to
each other, and looking at them I suddenly
discovered their meaning. The watch-face
had been deliberately broken by being struck
by the edge of some sharp instrument like a
knife edge, and this was the reason for the
