like eyes as he raised a huge stone maul
with which to spatter her brains upon the
ice. Like a flash Kidlappik’s arm shot
back, the ivory barb of his heavy hunting
harpoon flashed red in the smoky light
of the blubber lamp. The stone maul
crashed from the uplifted hand as the
harpoon bit into Neuktuk’s vitals and im-
paled him like a seal. Rearing on mukluk-
shod heels, he crashed to the floor with a
gurgling groan and a black look of mur-
derous hate to writhe in his death throes
on the frozen altar on which the trembling
wife of Lemik was to have been sacrificed.

With a contemptuous kick at the
squirming body of the deflated “God”,
Kidlappik backed from the igloo with
bared snow-knife aid fled to his igloo,
prepared to battle to the death. But no
one pursued him. In fear and trembling
the tribesmen gathered about the polar
bearskin bier of their fallen angatkuk,
beseeching him to return to life even as
his life blood joined that of his victims
on the floor of the igloo.

While worshippers at the icy shrine of
the defunct “God” stripped the body,
broad-backed women melted snow in stone
cooking pots to wash it. But wonders
hadn’t ceased. Even as the snow com-
menced to melt, awed Eskimos told Mac-
Gregor, one of the blubber lamps com-
menced to sing that its flame, like the
spirit of Neuktuk, was everlasting and
could never be extinguished. Convinced
by this new “miracle” that the spirit of
the departed “Saviour” still hovered about
them, they insisted that the frozen body
of the dead medicine man had actually
commenced to breathe, had laughed and
raised its hands to heaven. “Then,” ex-
plained Kidlappik, “something came over
me. I remained dead for many hours.
When I awakened, women were washing
Neuktuk’s body and preparing it for
burial.” Tashosha threw three handfuls
of bloody water into the face of every
grown-up and one in the face of each child
to drive away lurking spirits.” And thus,
still surrounded by an aura of superstition
and black magic was the murdering “Mes-
siah” also consigned to an icy sepulchre.

“And where,’ demanded McInnes, “‘is
Hector Pitchford, who traded here?” His
store and house are empty.”

The Eskimos shook their heads and
lapsed into aboriginal taciturnity, which
no efforts of the police could break.

A visit to Kawanana, the “Eskimo
Princess”, trader for the Sabellum Trad-
ing Company, in her shack nearby, failed
to cast any light on the white man’s dis-
appearance. Still in the grip of religious
frenzy, she refused to take her eyes from
her Bible, though, to McInnes’ impatient
questions she admitted she didn’t under-
stand what it-was all about.

With Nidlappik under arrest, sleds
loaded with fresh supplies of seal and
caribou meat, and Neuktuk in his icy
tomb, McInnes warned the Eskimos of
