Farm LANDs AND NaturAL RESOURCES. 45 MEDICAL SERVICE. In some of the more isolated districts of the Province the Provincial Government pays a subsidy to a resident physician. This subsidy is intended in the first instance to offer some inducement to a physician to locate in a section that shows live settlement possibilities, but where immediate remuneration from regular fees would not be sufficient to attract him in the ordinary way. The Government grant provides the doctor with a certain amount of cash regularly which he can rely upon receiving, the same afford- ing an inducement to an enterprising practitioner to carry on professional work in a rural district. It being recognized that the Government subsidy at the outset is afforded a doctor to induce him to begin practice, it follows that when there is sufficient work for two medical men the subsidy would automatically cease. SOCIAL LIFE IN THE RAILWAY AREA. The democratic spirit is strongly emphasized throughout British Colum- bia, and nowhere is it more in evidence than in the beautiful country served by the Pacific Great Eastern Railway line. In the Cariboo and Lillooet Districts the successful man and the new-comer meet on equal terms. Neighbourly ties are soon formed and active co-operation and a furthering of mutual interests are everywhere the rule. The social life provides plenty of recreation for all ages and stations in life. Dances, entertainments, and socials are frequent, especially during the winter season, and most public events are participated in by the countryside for miles around. The means for summer recreation are numberless and many sections have community halls where entertainments and dances are held. Theatres are found in the larger towns, and athletic sports are a strong feature as well. SETTLERS’ EFFECTS AND LIVE STOCK. Settlers’ effects, consisting of such articles as wearing-apparel, books, household furniture, tools, instruments, etc., may be brought into Canada duty-free. It is best to secure detailed information on these points, if required, from the nearest immigration agent. Prospective citizens enter- ing the Province with live-stock and settlers’ effects should familiarize themselves as far as possible with the quarantine regulations of Canada. Stock coming from the United States must be inspected at a port of entry on the Canadian border. Certificates should be secured before starting.
