STAFF WRITER Set in South America at the time of the Aztec kingdom just before the arrival of the Spanish, Apocalypto is Mel Gibson’s most recent attempt at a thought provoking movie based around a grey area in hu- man history. First of all, if you don’t go to/rent/buy a movie to read a novel, don’t watch this movie. Responding to much of the negative press he got from leav- ing his Passion of the Christ subtitled through the whole film, he decided to follow suit with Apocalypto. While this can add depth to the movie, it automatically classifies it as a thinker, and not one that you can add to your collection and throw on in the background for the sake of having something PlayStation. BULLY “HAAKON SULLIVAN 2 STAFF WRITER In Bully, a game made by Rockstar Vancouver for the going in the background. The previews and reviews to this point seam very misleading, and while I don’t intend to give away the movie itself, I would like to clarify it a bit. The movie itself is based around one person, Jaguar Paw and his journey, against his will, to the Aztec “capital” where the Aztec culture believes their end is coming. Luck favors Jaguar Paw and as hé escapes, fulfills a prophecy, and this al- lows him to fully embrace his culture. Personally I: think dinate and writer Mel Gibson has tal- ent, and that before he is done he will release another epic such as Braveheart, but neither Passion nor Apocalypto is such a movie. While better then The Passion in many ways, espe- cially in his more tasteful and tactful use of gore, violence, and other items of mature sub- ject matter, there is still some- thing missing from Apocalypto that leaves the movie wanting, for me it was what I believed to be an anti-climactic ending “that reminded’ me of Tolken’s habit in The Hobbit but as I go over the movie more and more in my head I’m starting to ap- preciate its place in the world of movies more and more.- To cap off this rant, I have to give this move 3 sacrifices out of 5 the first time I watched it, but a 4 out of 5 after I was able to think and analyze the movie. - AmpBeR L. RICHARDS STAFE WRITER Right before I got my ticket for the movie, I was thinking that I was impressed how a movie like this could have great actors in it and that the movie was still number one at the box office week after week. So I was guaranteed to laugh after the fact that it didn’t make me laugh a whole lot. I don’t ever recall Ben Stiller, Robin Wil- liams, Owen Wilson and Dick Van Dyke ever making hor- rible films that no one would go see. Admittedly, I wasn’t really around to see some of Dick Van Dyke’s movies since I am still only in my twenties. This movie, besides the great comedians in it, has more OVER THE EDGE Movie Reviews “This movie is one of those where you have to learn January 26, 2007 lessons and try to change things to try to get things - done.” of a serious note than some- thing that is trying to make me laugh. This film is a dramatic/ comedy. This movie isn’t like a normal dramatic/comedy, the main guy doesn’t get a girl at the end: This movie is one of those where you have to learn lessons and try to change things to try to get things done. To learn at a higher level to get things accomplished. The movie is about a father named Larry, played by Stiller, who can’t seem to hold down a job for very long. His fam- ily, mostly his very own kid, wants his Dad to get a job and be proud of him. Larry then goes to a job hunting place and the woman there says to go to this place, which is the mu- seum. He is so desperate for a job that he doesn’t care were he works. But he’s questioning the job, “Do I really want to work here?” Before he knows it, he is hired on the spot to... be a night guard. The mu- seum wasn’t making too much money so they needed to hire one guard for the night and had to let go of three older night guards. Larry wasn’t experi- enced for this job but as long as he did the chore list in order and as fast as he can, he should fideo Game Review Welcome to Bullworth Academy PS2, you play the role of a 15 year old named Jimmy Hop- kins who has just arrived at Bullworth Academy after be- ing expelled from a bunch of schools in the past. After being dropped off, we quickly real- izes that this school is like no other and is quickly engulfed into a chaotic mess of rival cliques, crooked teachers, and flirtatious girls. This year is a year that will change his life forever. As soon as you start Bully, you can quickly notice that this game is very similar to Grand Theft Auto. You can run around doing jobs for cliques, teachers, or .other characters or you can just pick fights with people. To do all of this, Rockstar has given you an ar- senal that any mischievous kid would drool over which ranges from stink bombs to slingshots. With these tools of destruction, you can do almost anything like egging houses to putting firecrackers down the toilet. Going to class is also en- joyable, as if you show up you are rewarded with a mini game that increases in difficulty each time you pass. You also get rewarded for completing class successfully like getting a bike from shop class and accuracy upgrades from playing dodge- ball in Gym. Other mini games include bike races, arcade games, and boxing matches all of which are entertaining. As well, you can also try to date all the girls in the school, but be careful as you can start a fight between two of your ladies. The story of Bully revolves around Jimmy becoming king of the school and protecting the weak from the bullies. To do this you have to win respect from each of the cliques. Each clique has its own unique at- tributes and each have a leader. The cliques are typical: you have the nerds, the jocks, the preps, the bullies, the greas- ers, and the townies. Each also has an enemy clique that they be fine. When he is left alone to do some chores; mysterious things start to happen. While ‘trying to do his chores as fast as he can, he realizes that -he learns a few things about : history. Larry was given advice by one of the night guards, played by, Dick Van Dyke, that when you start working here, it is easier to do your ‘job if you brush up on your history. Larry also doesn’t know half of the historians either. Once he knows about his history, his job. becomes so much easier, to some point anyways. Night after night, his job: becomes easier and easier. At the end, everything works _out for him. For the historians, living in many different times in history, everyone can work together as one to get things done and fight against the evil. He gets to keep this job and his family, including his son is very proud of him; the night security man at the Museum. My advice for this movie is, if someone says something to you knowing that they look dumb and stupid, be- lieve them. For this movie, I give 4 out of 5 popcorn pieces. will want you to fight against. For example, in one job I had to rescue the nerd’s G&G char- acter sheets from the bullies who took them. You also get an arch enemy in the game, who is competing with you and a friend of yours to become the king of the school giving the game a feeling familiar to a high school setting. To even begin describing what you can do in this game will take more than a news- paper article to describe. Fight your way through six chapters and enjoy the quirky characters and strange social network of Bullworth Academy.
