Over the Edge - March 14 FIRST NATIONS REPRESENTATIVE Allanah Kenoras-Schwandt, also known as Ali, is a second year Public Administration and Community Development Ma- jor with a minor in Commerce. Ali grew up in Grand Forks, British Columbia and belongs to the Secwepemc nation of Chase, BC. She is a proud big sister, and works to set the right examples for her siblings and encourages them to strive for their best. Having grown-up in a small community Ali looks to UNBC as her home away from home, cherishing the friendships that have blossomed here and the knowledge gained with every day; she cannot imagine hav- ing gone anywhere else for her degree. A small university such as UNBC gives Ali the opportunity to interact and get to know her peers and community. Ali is an avid volunteer on and off campus, she is currently one of the UNBC Timberwolves drum- mers, a PSN Peer Councillor, works with the First Nations Cen- ter as a Student Assistant to the Northern Advancement Program, is helping the First Nations Graduates of 2012 fundraise, and is always available to lend a hand in community events. One of her many favourite campus locations is the First Nations Cen- ter, where she was given the chance to learn about local culture and her own heritage during her first year and continues to learn. Being elected as UNBC’s First Nations Representative within NUGSS would be a great honour for Ali, and excites her with the opportunities to work with more people around the school. Ali’s position within NUGSS would be to represent the First Nations student body on campus. She wil! be working with the First Nations Center to meet any needs of the Indigenous student population; organizing an event for the whole student body, edu- cating them on First Nations culture; as well as working to unify the university with traditional teachings. Ali is open to question and comments, feel free to email her and she will get back to you as soon as possible. 7 ACADEMIC REPRESENTATIVE Hi, my name is Morganne and I am a third year Environ- mental Planning student with a minor in GIS from Gibsons, B.C. I have decided to run for the position of Academic Rep- resentative to become more in- volved at UNBC and gain the valuable experiences NUGSS has to offer. I am currently a member of Students for a Green University, Student Planners Association and the Biology club. I have also had the opportunity to be the Director of Internal Affairs on Rez Council last year which allowed me to chair the Education and Community Building committee. This year, I am one of the Green RAs on residence which has helped me develop skills in working with teams, leadership, and the ability to problem solve. If given the opportunity for Academic Representative, I will work hard to bring new and in- novative ideas from students to CASHS and CSAM committees as well as continue UNBC’s success in the Better World Books Program.
