passed before yet another murderer, Dr.
Crippen, provided in 1910 the occasion for
a dramatic demonstration of the utility of
wireless. As is well known, Captain Ken-
dall, of the S. S. Montrose, wirelessed the
news to London that Crippen and his
mistress were on board his ship, and Chief
Inspector Dew, like Tanner before him, was
able to make a faster crossing and arrest
the fugitives when their ship docked. Wire-
less is now used extensively for police pur-
poses, but it might be of interest to recall
that the first “police message’ in connection
with a crime broadcast for the information
of the public was sent out from Savoy Hill
in 1925.

In these days of ‘scientific aids’ and of
radio-telephony, telephones, _ teleprinters,
aeroplanes, and fast cars—all developed
since the days of Tawell and Muller—some
officers must often wonder how their pre-
decessors did their job without such essential
amenities. We can throw a girdle round
the earth in a space of time that makes
Puck’s achievement seem very insignificant,
but we have no monopoly of the human
qualities that go to make a good police
officer. Within their limits the detectives
of yesteryear were remarkably successful,
and in moments of self-satisfaction it is well
for us to remember that policemen have had
patience, perseverance, courage, initiative,
energy, and enterprise, ever since the for-
mation of the first police force.
