NUGSS NUGGETS by John Stevenson A useful fact you may want to know is that the University collects our Society fees from you. Some people have requested that their fees get returned to them for various reasons. In the past, I think we have returned two or three student’s fees, to avoid any hassles. However, upon some research by myself I discovered that SFU’s Student Society had this same problem back in 791-92, and the case made it to the B.C. Court of Appeals (the highest power Court in B.C.), The result was that the students lost (a lot of money in legal fees), and the court case too boot. The point T am trying to make is that EVERY Ugrad student must pay their society fees. I am sorry if some of you do not think they go to good use, but dems da rules, and you have to play by them; if you would like to see a change in the spending habits of NUGSSarun in the upcoming NUGSS elections!! If you would like to read the court cases, I have them on file, and your more than welcome to read them. Another useful fact you may wish to know is that we are buying a video projector to complement our new P.A. System. It is a very nice piece of equipment and we will be trying it out for the first time during. the Trainspotting Movie Night in the Canfor. The reasons behind spending the money to buy this equipment-are: 1) the lack of existing equipment 2) NUGSS and affiliated Clubs get charged more than enough for using EMS equipment which I venture to say pales in quality 3) we figured that this would help Clubs put on Movie Nights, Readings, Seminars, Guest Speakers etcete. to help campus mpus events 4) once we have it, it is always there for use whenever the members of the NUGSS (almost everyone) wish to use it, but please book ahead though! 5) we save everyone affiliated with the Society money!!! One thing that new clubs find that they open accounts at Scotia Bank, because they do all of our banking, and cut us an excellent rate for their services. The reason behind this is because our Treasurer (Grant Leippi), needs to have access to Club accounts in case that something MAY go wrong. It is NOT because we are money hungry, and want to take all your cash while your not looking. Case in point: a letter comes to NUGSS from a bank. The letter is addressed to a club that does not exist anymore (old Radio Club), but that there is $700.00 in the account still, and has been untouched for a year or so. The people who had signing authority are long gone!! HHHMMMmmmm. So now we have to track down these people and get them to write a letter saying yes, it is O.K. for us to take control of the account for now. Established clubs may switch over to Scotia Bank in an act of UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT good faith, or in worst case refuse, but if for those of you that do switch - there will be.a bonus $$ amount waiting. in your new Scotia account. Please inform Grant at the NUGSS Office of when you wish to make the switch as he has to be there to put his John Henry on the account too. I thank you greatly for your assistance on this matter. As NUGSS sponsors and funds most of the Clubs on campus, it should not be implied that we will provide an office for you too, We will help you in whatever reasonable. way we can, but we can’t go around building new offices every month. A few clubs have requested office space from us, and the recent Newspaper/ NUGSS/Women’s Center/NRS/ English Club Office “Musical Chairs” space proposal prepared by NUGSS has to go through the Space Advisory Committee. We can’t speed things up; we’ ve done our part, now the University Admin. should work that mess out as they have the final say regardless to our recommendations. To new clubs requesting office space, please be patient, as you may have to wait until a new building is built; if I had all the answers J could tell you more. Lastly, the Board of Governors and Senate Elections are here. We have nomination forms in our office for both positions for anyone interested. PLEASE be aware that these are important positions to be filled, and if elected you would be expected to be the liason between the bigwigs on campus, and the student body. NUGSS wishes that elected persons possibly come to our Board meetings and/or write a short article for the paper to update us all on issues and in return act as a channel for conveying student concerns to these groups, because lets face it folksa.this is where the big decisions are made. Incidentally, our Board Meetings are. held in room 5- 125 every Monday at 3:00 —p-m., and: EVERYONE is welcome. Why not come out in person and see us in action?? How does your money get spent anyways?? Do those NUGSS Directors just sit there with coffee and doughnuts?? A person who voices their concerns no matter how “right or wrong” ‘certainly takes more courage and deserves respect in my mind than a person who isn’t willing to do this. All of us should be willing to listen and tolerate others views, and even though they may be totally different, THIS IS WHAT A DN bv OE RS. ET ¥ ENVIRONMENT SHOULD ENCOURAGE. Please recognize that.we at NUGSS really do work for you, but we cannot create policies and other things that do not exist, nor can we proceed with this stuff faster than the University Administration lets us. I feel KR AK &, SOCIETY it is my job to untangle the red-tape to provide you all with the best help and answers we'can give you in achieving student events, clubs, activities, and policies, that are expected from you all. I do know that the POWDERFEST II trip to Jasper was a supremely good March 3, 1997 — Over The Edge — Page 3 time, and everyone who attended mentioned that for ‘$200.00, it would be hard to beat. Ahhbh untracked down Eagle’s Crest....... yes indeed!
