Poor old Dan INean, strug- gling through his declining years all alone in a filthy little cabin some 30 miles from the Post had finally mushed to the Happy Hunting Grounds. It was the third time our sleigh had been used as a catafalque and I hoped it would be the last. The trail was fairly good, the skies were clear, and as we camped that night I thought of a little rhyme from The Burial of Sam McGee, that Game Warden Steve Fa- herty used to mumble: “And that very might, as we lay packed tight in our robes beneath the snow, And the dogs were fed, and the stars o er- head were dancing heel and toe”. A couple of days later we sadly hauled our grisly load to the secluded graveyard at McDames Creek. The “long patrol” of that winter came a bit later than usual. Now February and March are the very best months for travel in the Cassiar, though good con- ditions (a slight fall of soft dry snow on glare ice is perfect) often occur right up till the first week in May. In March we turned our faces East and headed for the remote Turnagain River —often called the Little Muddy by old- timers. The job was something in con- nection with checking trap-lines I believe. We passed the tragic spot where we were caught two years previously by an early snowfall when hunting mountain goats. We made good time to Deadwood Lake where lived some half dozen Indians. Continuing on our way, a day or two later we reached the banks of a large river where the boss conducted his investiga- tions. Thence by following the old Davy Trail* straight north we reached ower Post. On the latter part of the trip an un- expected spring thaw increased our diffi- culties. So merely stopping overnight at the trading post in order not to be caught by the ice going out of Dease River, we high-tailed for home as fast as we could. But the sun shone as brightly as mid- summer, temperatures soared, and long stretches of open water told us the “‘in- between season” had arrived. These ‘“‘in- between seasons” occupy about three weeks every Spring and some two weeks in the Fall, during those periods snow is too patchy and ice isn’t strong enough for sleigh travel while overland it’s too muddy on the primitive trails. Cussing the unseasonable weather Const. Davis was forced to abandon our sleigh and we took to the woods and slippery game trails. We were pretty gaunt when we got back that time, and not in the best of humour. Guess that’s.a poor excuse for what happened next, but the North is not a country of genteel manners or mild tem- * Used as one of several Overland Routes to the Klondyke in 1898-99, Lynnwood Inn e Licensed Premises e Situated at Lynnmour, B.C.
