Page Fifty-four week he lay as one dead, then he came to— a madman, and blind—stone blind. “Barney Murgatroyd is still in that Que- bec asylum, as mad as a March hare, and still stone blind. All he has ever been known to say that anyone could understand is ‘To hell with the moon. When a man’s dead, he’s good and dead.’ He says other things, but ‘it is all -Double-Dutch—maybe the language of the people in the moon, if there are any people there. “Ay, Colin—there’s queerer things in this world, my boy, than you dream about in your philosophy,’ as Tennyson says, or maybe it was Tom Moore.” “Tt was Shakespeare, Dan.” “Well—ye’ll have to admit, I was near it anyway,’ laughed the Inspector, unper- turbed. “Better have another cup of coffee,” put in the sergeant after a long pause. “Shure! I wouldn’t be minding at all, at all, especially if itll help the ghost industry any. Here’s looking at ye, Colin my boy.” Kerry leaned back and looked into the fire. “Ghosts? Sitting in an easy chair by this cosy fire, I might be inclined to say there aren't any, but outside, in the bush, among the tall pines and firs of British Columbia, or somewhere up on this rocky coastline, say, with the yellow light of a full moon shining through the scampering clouds and throwing streaks of light into the dark places, or maybe reflecting its silvery self from the surface of a lake or the river, with all the queer cries of the night birds and the restless animals, and other forest noises ye can never hope to explain — man — I might be inclined to change my ground and say with you, Colin. “Maybe after all there are ghosts.’ “What is a ghost but something unusual ye can’t explain. When ye can explain it, it isn’t a ghost any longer. Isn’t that true now?” With Inspector Kerry at Port Coulin and right on the spot to hold anything down that might need holding down, Sergeant Dal- gleish set out the next morning on the little investigation he had been compelled to put off for several weeks. It was nothing seriously pressing, as he had told Kerry, but it was one of these things that if not straightened out might easily develop into a tragedy. ; Some two years before, a man had arrived in the district, out of the wilderness as it were, and settled himself in an old unused broken-down shack which sat on a little clearing in the centre of a fairly wooded surrounding known as Bluebird Canyon. This was situated some ten miles out of Port Coulin as the river flows to the sea. This newcomer was broad - shouldered, bearded, and as taciturn as the devil himself. German or Russian? No one in the district of Bluebird Canyon or Port Coulin itself knew just where he came from. He spoke to no one! He interested himself in no one; and he betrayed a definite and aggressive objection to anyone trying to become interested in him. From what the sergeant had been able to learn, the man did little or nothing outside THE HOUSEC@F The Oyster Bar | QUALITY FOOD PRINCE RUPERT'S MOST POPULAR CAFE * Prince Rupert, B.C. A.
