ie Dear Editor, ! am concerned with the power that unions have gained within our society. | don’t want you to misunder- stand me, | think that unions are useful tools that have a place within a nation, but | think that their-power should be more limited. It seems like a month can’t go by without another strike happening somewhere in the province. Earlier this year the support staff at the university struck, putting students and profes- sors in the middle of their Be Unions fight with the administration. Right now the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) workers at public schools are on strike making all sorts of demands while children are missing school, parents are unconvenienced and teachers are making less on strike pay than they could be making working at McDonald’s. One of the demands being made by the CUPE workers is that all teachers must submit (in writing) a pro- posal to CUPE whenever they want to have parent and Me: One Hold the printed image right up te your nose and look through the image as if gazing off into the dis- tance. The image will be blurry. Move the page very slowly away from your face. As you move the image, the two circles above the image will appear to turn into three circles. At this point hold the image still and an amazing 3D illusion will emerge from the pattern. In this example the image is the planet Saturn. The longer you look, the deeper and more clear the hidden image will become. £ helpers in their class which CUPE will then approve. For teachers of young children this would be a nightmare. Kindergarten teachers have at least one parent helper in every day. These parent helpers do not interfere with CUPE jobs in any way because teacher's aids are only even used in classes that have children with spe- cial needs in the classroom. Having parent helpers gives the teacher a chance to have more one on one time with children, as well as giving teachers a Problems with NUGSS Continued From Page 5 Now for Mr. Dossa. This is the many we elected as pres- ident of the student society two years ago. His mandate was to make the Women’s Centre an equity center and to make both the women’s society and newspaper self sufficient. From this day this is not the case. He was just another puppet for Chris Reed, head of finance. Each way Reed voted, Dossa voted. Then we elected him Ombudsperson and he was Avaiabie at acting prez for the Model UN club. The Model UN was the most successful club before Dossa’s Presidency. Well he may have done a satisfactory job as Ombudsperson, he took the Model UN to shit. Oh, let me add that he was asked to resign his position as chair of NUGSS meetings. Now Mr. Dossa is a student representative of the board of Governors. God knows that the world will come to next. Mr. Dossa, your success at . the student society may have been a free ride as you have done everything based on popularity not on content. Now you have a successful resume, | challenge you to leave a legacy that all stu- dents remember you by. A legacy where you fight for students, not just for a good resume, but something peo- ple will remember you by. Thank you, Ray Stevens Store and participating Chevron Town Pantry locations. chance to talk to parents about their children without having to set up an appointment. This is just one of the prob- lems | have with unions. While | worked at Overwaitea | belonged to the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, and because of a con- tract my union had negotiated before | began working there, | could not work more than twenty hours a week, | could not work during the day on week days and | had to pay union dues which ended up being four times as much as the income tax that was deducted from my _ pay cheque, while only making $8.30 an hour. Another example of the problems with unions is an example given to me by a person | know who works for one of the mills in town. In order for him not to break any union rules to move his computer monitor from his cubicle to the cubicle next to his he would have had to call two different unions. The first union would send someone to unhook his mon- itor from his computer. The second union would move the Woman’s Letter monitor to the next cubicle and bring the new monitor back. The person from the first union would have to come back to hook up the monitor to the computer again. My fourth and final example has to do with an example from highschool. When ! was in highschool on the student council we wanted to paint the lockers in the school, because they were a hideous Orange colour, and have the Art 12 students paint murals on them. The teachers who were helping with the student council told us that because we might be infringing on one of the local school unions that we shouldn’t bother trying. | think that these examples are a sad testimony to what unions can do when they gain too much power. Unions have their place, but | think that they have grown far to large for that place and are starting to lose all sense of practicality and reality.
