WS ee Page 8 Cassiar Courier CASSTAR Bits & Pieces by Katie Sevier Lee Coran has bowed out of this colunm for a while. Lee not only types at least fifty percent of what you read in the Cassiar Courier, but also works at the liquor store, runs the Northern Lights College, does voluntary work at the school, calculates your tax returns, helps with bake sales and the Overture Concerts and curls in bonspiels..... just to give you an idea of some of her commitments. With all her activities, its a wonder she hasn’t fallen into bits ane pieces SSS Cassiar has been a hive of activity this month and it’s good to see so many people “getting involved’ —- a great tonic for those who felt they may have had a bout of ‘‘cabin fever” over the long cold winter. A tip of the hat to Overture Concerts and to Werner Schneeberger and Frank Buckley for giving the school children complimentary: tickets to some of the shows. If youstepinside Frank’s office you will see a whole wall covered with delightful thankyou notes from all the children. It Sey was appreciated. We hear you will soon have a new office Frank and so will the Courier! HALF WAY-HOUSE?............for the new Town Administration Office, Accomodations Office and OUR new home. Congratulations to Carol] Fugere. She is one of 400 Students across Canada to be selected to attend the Forum for Young Canadians in Ottawa in June. The students will spend one week of concentrated learning and participation in parliamentary procedures. Carol appreciates the © generosity of Cassiar Asbestos Corporation for financially sponsor- ing her and would like to extend special thanks to Mr. Brian Pewsey for his immediate response. Colleen and Fred Hewett back from Hawaii-sporting healthy suntans. Congratulations to the winners of the 25th Annual Bonspiel who won a trip to those sun- drenched Pacific Isles. We also hear that Jeannie Hockhausen will be heading that way soon. Jeannie has just left, Cassiar which has been her home for some 5 years. We will miss her cheerful smile around town. She will also be visiting the Maritimes later this year. Bon Voyage and Bon Chance Jeannie! - We will also be saying farewell to Heather and~ Brock. Bailey and their dear little son Connor. They will be moving south to ranching country at Alexia Creek, west of Williams Lake. It should be quite a change from. the frozen north and Connor will be able to enjoy snow free sun kicks. Heather will be missed at Cassiar Private Hospital very much as she has worked here as a registered nurse for three years. Congratulations on your promotion with the Fish and Wildlife Branch Brock and best of luck to the three of you for your new life down south. It’s good to see Pat and Bill Riddle and_ We were also sorry to see the departure of David and Brian Pewsey’s mother at the the end of March. Mrs. Pewsey spent a week on Vancouver Island with Brian and Doreen Pewsey and Stephan and Anne before flying to the U.K. to visit Mrs.Strutt in Cornwall. From there she returns to her home in South Africa. We do hope Mrs.Pewsey was able to see that spring dges come to B.C. ifshe reached the beautiful Butchard Gardens, Jack and Wilma Grant were farewelled at a surprise party at the Leathleys. It is reported that Gil Leathley turned up in his ‘“‘curlers”’. after much fun and games bonspieling. It is ‘a pity the Grants weren't present at the open- ing of the new School Wing and those who attended heard how their continued effort and hard work was greatly appreciated. Special Congratulations to Mr. Dick Chambers who is now the new Principal of Cassiar Ele- mentary - Secondary School. We've just heard that Mary and Gil Leathley will be leaving us the the end of April and moving south to Granisle. A special farewell will be made in our next edition of the Courier. Al Rosser has also left Cassiar Asbestos Corpor-- ation and is now working with an engineering company in Vancouver, For those people who had the pleasure of knowing Al and his wife, Jan I’m sure they will be greatly missed. We wish Al every success with his new position. Spring break was a time for family get toge- thers with many making an exit out of town and lots of people appearing in Cassiar to eno the crisp sunny days here. . Jane Smit and her son Jamie went back east so Jamie could meet his proud grandparents. Vivian Cousins enjoyed the two weeks ane relatives in the sunny south and Kerry and Peter Jones have recently enjoyed a short break down south, too. Kerry says you can smell fresh mown grass and the beautiful cherry blossoms. There - are pregnant daffodils everywhere and the cro-- cuses are blooming - quite a contrast to the mud and slush up north. Visiting Cassiar were Mrs. Ingrid Fregonese and her daughter Diana, and their dog Fido. Esther and Rolf Lee’s daughter and her two chil- dren were here, and so were Stephen Leathley, Doug _ Baycroft and Barbie Kamlah. Tracy Zemenchik and her niece came to visit their family here. Mrs. Christie came from Nova Scotia to visit Sher daughter, Clare, for eight days. Clare has taken over Wilma Grant’s job in the school resource Squash *Club. members and volunteers have been working flat out to complete the con- struction of the Squash court on the stage at the Rec centre. We look forward to putting it to the test very soon. The pancake supper at All Saints Church on Shrove Tuesday was a great success. Gerry Kam- lah made delicious blueberry pancakes and we ' hear. his sourdough pancakes are even better! On Saturday, March-30, Iona Campagnola don- ned a uniform to help the Catholic ladies make pancakes and serve breakfast to the hungry crowds.. Cassiar was bubbling with enthusiasm during the Schmoo Daze activities. Apart from frozen Brownies and frozen spectators trying to see the Torchlight Parade in pitch dark and bitterly cold conditions, the whole of Schmoo Daze was a great success. Perhaps future parades could be held on the Saturday morning so the whole fam- ily can get out to cheer it on? One should stop to think of the behind scene efforts that go into the Winter Carnival. Poor Tim Riordan had to go down to the Rec Centre to see his wife. Tim and Barb are now recuperat- ing on a trip south, down the inside passage to Vancouver, a fling in Disneyland, followed by a cruise to Acapulco. : We hear and see that disco dancing is all the rage now after the weekend disco dance workshop. The ladies who took the lessons showed remark- E able flare and talent at recent dances. We also hear that a couple of men attended the lessons and look forward to seeing them ‘“‘swinging into spring” at the next dance at the Rec Centre. We see Eve Thirlwell has been out and about selling raffle tickets for a trip to Las Vegas. Who l won? None other than gamblin’ gal, Pat Borsato. Pat may even let you in on the deal if you're interested. Eve also organized the welcoming committee and bevy of bartenders for the curl- ing bonspiel. The Lioness Club ladies did a ster- | ling job manning the snack bar and feeding the ravenous curlers day and night. Congratulations to all who made the 25th An- nual Curling Bonspiel such a success. Jane Guar- don designed the “cute curling rocks”’ - the em- blem of the Jubilee Event. The funds from all the laborious pizza making that Hine Robichaud and Sandy Hickman did over the winter fin- | anced most of the weekend - a tremendous | effort when the Pizza pastry could only be pre- pared 3 at a time! Hine and Sandy and their team did so much to make the weekend a suc- cess and still managed to curl. So many people were instrumental in making the event a success, as well as. all the participants. some of which were in outlandish team gear, Bouquets to the | ice-making team, headed by Robert Duri and Kinky Borsato, who spent .many sleepless, nights toiling to prepare the sheets. For some, that weekend trip will be something never to be forgotten. For ees it’s probably best forgotten! Jubilee Bonspiel Cont. from page | - The Club would like to personally thank all the people whose co-operation and hard work made this Bonspiel the most successful ever, and to the Bonspiel Committee, headed by Ed Michael and ably assisted by. Hine Robichaud and Sandy Hickman, who brought the whole thing together A special thank you to Eve Thirlwell, who altho she doesn’t curl, always lends her able assistance to our Bonspiel, to Al Keim and his crew, who provided the refreshments at the Snake Pit.and whose presence was appreciated both on and off the ice. The work of the Cassiar Lionesses i in running the Snack Bar twenty-four hours a day was really ap | preciated by the curlers and spectators alike. We would like to extend our appreciation to all “members of the Cassiar Community Club for giving up their use of the Rec Centre and the Arena for our Bonspiel. A special thank you is extended to Cassiar Asbestos. Corporation for their assistance in providing the accommodation and meals to all the visiting curlers. The spirit of good fellowship and €0-operation demonstrated by the people of Cassiar in making our visitors welcome was greatly appreciated. The true spirit of this gentlemanly game of curl- ing was felt throughout the Bonspiel, both on and off the ice. The Cassiar Curling Club Silver Jubiliee Bonspiel will long be remembered in the hearts of all who participated: (7) -Girls at the Klondike - Girls at the T & M bar - The hoola “‘girls” and their knockers. Don’t forget to forget the above! It was generally agreed that the most memorable ~ experience of the weekend was Cassiar’s contri- 8 bution to the parade. The flag corps, cadets and cheerleaders did a grand job of grinning and bearing the Suey . chilly weather. Cassiar entered two floats this year. One was a huge white anniversary cake built to fit “snuggly” _ over a Ford Courier. Candles, flowers and a mas- sive “25” adorned: the cake, Three Cassiarites dressed as “‘super chets” served actual cake which had been prepared by our cookery. % FIRST EVENT CASSIAR ASBESTOS CORP.
