The one thing that seems to stand out is the fact that many lives have been saved because of smoke detectors. In many cases, reports say that smoke detectors, if installed or were working would have presented loss of life. I will use two reports as examples. SINGLE FAMILY DWELLING - ONE KILLED A fire in a two story dwelling of wood frame construction killed a six year old girl and totally destroyed the structure. The child’s parents were asleep in the second floor bedroom when they were awakened by smoke and heat. The father broke a window, climbed out onto the roof and jumped to the ground. His wife woke two other daughters who were sleeping in another second floor bedroom, and lowered them out the window to their father; she then jumped out. The father ran to a neigh- bor’s home and telephoned the fire department. Both parents were unable to get down to the first floor where the six year old was asleep because of the fire. Arriving fire fighters found the home well invol- ved with fire but had the fire under control in about 30 minutes, using preconnected hand lines. Officials stated that a smoke detector had been installed on the second floor at the top of the stairs, but it had been DISCONNECTED by the occupants at some earlier time when cooking fumes from the kitchen had activated it. CARELESS SMOKING ACTIVATES SMOKE DETECTORS — OCCUPANTS SUCCESSFULLY EVACUATE _ Smoke detectors woke 12 occupants of a col- lege fraternity house enabling them to escape from a fire in a three story building of protected ordinary construction. The fire department was notified at 6:38 a.m. Arriving fire fighters saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the first floor of the building. Enter- ing the house, fire fighters found the living room fully involved in fire which was spreading up a nearby stairway to the second floor. They extin- guished the fire in approximately 20 minutes, using a 1% hand line. The smoke detectors had been installed the previous night because of a recently passed city ordinance that made smoke detectors mandatory. One of our fire fighters in town saved his house and family when smoke detectors warned him of a malfunctioning propane water heater. I don’t think I have to say any more: smoke detectors do save lives. As a fire prevention pro- ject the fire department is selling smoke detectors at cost. They have two linés available, one at .$15.00 and a second one that is not as sensitive for areas affected by cooking fumes, small trailers, etc. for $25.00. Contact any member of the fire department for your purchase.
