General Meeting Concerning the Build- ing ofa new school The Tahltan Tribal Couneil of northern British Columbia met today with School District #87(Stikine) and rejected their proposal to renovate and build on to the present structure which is 30 years has not been kept up during schoo] old and that time. The proposal as outlined by David Lynn the District Superintendent of Schools, was to renovate the existing school -building and build the proposed new ad- ditions. -classroom for junior secondary school students of 1200 sq. ft. -a library of 600 sq. ft. -administration area -industrial education area of 1200 sa. ft. -a gymnasium of 3130 sq. ft.. The total cost of this proposal was $784,170.00. According to Mr. Lynn, the School District was prepared to build immediately. However, the Tribal Coun- cil had hired an engineering firm which recommended against renovating the old structure to bring it up to acceptable standards. The School District's engin- eers recommended against building on to the old building. Atthe present time, the school is condemned by the Federal Fire Marshall's office, by the Regional Health officer and by the Tahltan people. At the meeting, the Tahltan people and the residents of the Stikine River Val- ley were unanimous in their decision t rejéet the proposal. Eighty (80%) per cent of the money which the School Dis- trict has offered for renovation of the present structure is Federal Dept. of Indian Affairs money which is paid to the School Board on behalf of the Tahltan tan tribe since 80% of the students in attendance are Tahltan. The position of the residents of the area is still the building of a com- pletely new school that will include future needs when designed.
