Paye 4 July,1981.Cassiar Courier Scouting NEWS. wy scorn Le \ The Cassiar Scouts are now in: possession of a full line of good camping equipment. We have tents, stoves, lanterns, tarps, axes, backpacks, foamies, plus many more items that are needed for year round camping. With all this new equipment stowed away in our trucks we took off camping the Victoria Day weekend in May. Tak- ing snow and rain into consideration we had to choose be- tween two places, Boya Lake and Dease Lake. Boya Lake was out and Dease Lake was in. We arrived at the camp on Saturday morning and the boys were impressed with the beautiful location and were happy to find out that nobody else was there. The first job the scouts had to do was pitch the tents. By now it was noon and every- body was hungry. Two scouts were appointed to be on ‘K.P. all day Sat- urday and their duties were cooking, cleaning and re- plenishing firewood and water. After lunch and some free time, a tent inspection was held and | think if the boys’ mothers had seen the tents they would have been happy. In order to make the ‘camp more challenging a point system was worked out-and points were to be awarded for inspection ana other programs. Two prizes were set, One for the competition and one for best camper/scout. The program for the afternoon consisted of safe axe hand- ling, wood chopping, camp hygiene and compass instruct- ions. In the evening a short compass course was held during which the boys learned to work precisely. After dinner there was free time and the boys tried to cross a creek on a rope. David Madore found out that the water was cold but decided not to give up. That’s the spirit, David! It was a late evening after sitting around the fire, relaxing and absorbing the peace and silence of nature. It was very beautiful indeed. Sunday morning saw a late breakfast and the new K.P. went into action. During the morning | staked out a long and confusing compass course and after lunch each scout had a run at it. A maximum of 26 points were awarded and only David Shayler managed to get all 26. Other activities this afternoon included safe gun handling and ‘ target shooting plus working on lashings. Each scout chad to construct an emergency _ lean- ‘to using what. chature, provided. FAREWELL Dental Assistants — Sue Pewsey, Nano Hudson, Dr. B.Rauch and Receptionist Irene Mulrooney, Dr. Bernard Rauch, Cassiar resident dentist -will be clos- ing his doors on June 26th, 1981. After serving the Cas- siar and surrounding areas for five full years ( 1976 — 81 ) he and his family are relocating to Victoria. B.C. We asked what he failed to achieve during that period. . . . _ It seemedsone patient desired a diamond placed in his front tooth; another patient requested a ruby in an upper. incisor, but what he had dreamed of never came to pass... someone entering with a freshly found gold nugget and, wishing to have it inserted as a permanent filling in his dentition. From all of us here in Cassiar who depend on his services; © thank you and best wishes in your new home. Good Luck, Bernie, Lynne and Abel. Crossing the creek The lean-to of each boy was judged for size, location, construction and wind resistance. By now it’ was time to cook dinner and after a long and busy afternoon every- body was glad to sit down and relax. But this didn’t last very long as the boys decided to play hide and seek and after the game some of the boys wished: to practice’ their knots a little and.to prepare for. Monday's test. After such a full.day everybody went to bed tired. On this wet Monday morning, nobody was in a hurry to get up.and the only reason | did was because | had a dream of a bear walking through camp. It was only a dream and | was a happy man again. Once breakfast was behind us the boys were tested on six knots. and on scouting in general. This concluded the competitions and once the points were added up it showed that David Shayler was the winner with a good lead. Well done, David! Lunch was fast approaching and then it was time to break camp. Rolling the sleeping bags, folding the tents, and clearing the camp of garbage kept us busy till 2:00'!. On the way home the boys wanted to know who won the award for best camper, | did not announce the winner till a week afters .To no. was-declared the: best. both wins, David. It was a good camp and | was pleased with all the boys. Our next camp will be a hiking camp and this time each boy will, have to bring and cook his own food over an. open fire. The next camp will take place on June 6/7 and One more camp is planned for June 20/21. We‘hope there will be no strike so that we can continue our camping/ outdoor activities before the winter comes. And now+! would’ Jike to thank all my scouts for their participation, their help and tHeir willingness to put up with ‘the change in méetings ‘and’ programs. Boys, you were great this year and ‘am proud of you all. | hope to see you back next year. Our best wishes to David Shayler who is leaving Cassiar this summer and moving south with his parents. At the end of June we will bid farewell to Jane Guardon. Jane first hired on with the nursing staff at Cassiar Hos- pital in November 1975, and after finding she just could not stay away, hired on again in June 1977. Jane has been a very popular member of our hospital staff, not only for her efficiency and leadership in her own field, but also for her artistic ideas and involvement in social affairs of the hospital. Jane and Jesse will be travelling to Port Hardy first for a visit with the Cadwaladers and then on to Wales for a month to visit with with Jane’s mother. They will even- tually settle in the Canary Islands where Jesse will con- tinue his studies. Rumour has it that Jane intends to indulge more in her painting. Whatever the future Jane, we wish you the very best of luck. Jane will be very much missed by the hospital staff but she may find that “she just can‘t stay away” again. Dr. Bruce Beaton and Jean Kapala recently joined Cassiar students on a canoe trip from Pinetree Lake to McDame Post. Although the weather could have been better, spirits were not dampened and a good time was had by all. I’m sure the presence of Bruce and Jean eased anxious minds of many parents. Thanks to Ritchie Day who filled in at the reception desk for two weeks, and congratulations Ritchie on your new job. We now have Carol Deyo with us in that position and many thanks to Carol for coming on such short notice and very efficiently filling in. Jean Kapala has been instructing a Cardio Pulmonary Re- suscitation course. The second session is about to start and from hearing the views of those who took the first course, this has been a very worthwhile endeavour. Many ‘thanks to Jean for her time and effort involved. GUIDING NEWS On June 15th, the Brownies and Guides held their wind=up banquet for the 1980-81 season. The ban-= quet=held in the Lions room= was, as usual, de= liciouse 65 Brownies, Guides and guests attended, The highlight of the evening was the flying-up cere- mony held for the Brownies who had completed the re- quirements enabling them to fly-up to Guides. They were Sian Jones, Tara Komperdo, Joanne Coran, and Nicole Deyo. The ceremony was rather special. The Brownies formed a horse shoe to wave goodbye and two Guides formed an archwaye After Mrs, Carin had pinned the wings onto the girls, they walked under the arch where they were greated by the guide troop. Four Brownies walked up to Guides. They were Ellen Artico, Sonia Saro, Shelly Turner, and Teresa Turner. These girls had only been Brownies for one year and thus could not complete all the tests. The Brownies put on a short entertainment before the supper and the Guides performed a short sketch, Nicole Deyo proposed the toast to the Queen and Ellen Artico proposed the toast to the Brownie and Guide Mothers, Mrs, Carin introduced the new Guide Leader ' Mrs, Maguire and the new Brown Owl, Margaret els During the evening Mary Elhorn presented badges to those girls who had earned them in the past couple of months, Now that Brownie and Guide meetings are over for the summer, the girls would like to thank all the testers and those people who came to the meetings. to help out or who coached the girls for special badges. The girls and leaders would also like to thank the mothers whose support throughout the year has, as always, been tremendous, Special thanks must go to Mary Elhorn who so very capably organized the badge side of both Brownies and Guides. This entails keeping detailed records of each girl’s achievments, arranging testers and _ testing _ appointments, ordering badges and ensuring that each dirk: receives those»she has earned, Mary. was often? seen at the Brownie and Guide meetings starting off crafts and such =and never missed a mothers* meetings Of course we all enjoyed her paviova at dinners. Thanks Mary! Nada Carin wishes to thank all who supported her while she was Brown Owl for the Cassiar Brownie Pack. Nada is “retiring” this year to make time for bigger and better things.
