Page 10 November 1983 Casciar Courier TOWN COUNCIL rc. Another roaring successful Annual General Meeting Was held October 1 1th. As usual, not one member of the public attended! What is the answer to our dog catcher prob- lem? The majority of people in town want the dogs that roam loose, picked up. For various good reasons. To prevent an innocent person being bit- ten, to help solve the problem of them running in packs before the situation arises, to keep other people’s property dog excrement free, and to keep the garbage where it belongs — in the cans. The Town Council went through the process of selecting a competent dog catcher only to have him quit hardly before he got into full stride. Why? While the reason hasn’t been proven yet, the matter is still under investigation. The Dog Catcher’s home and property were vandaliz- ed very badly and the only conclusion I can come to is it was someone who had their dog picked up and was upset. What some people fail to realize is that allowing your dog to run free is against the Jaw and as such, you are liable for its actions. Surely it is better to pay $25 for having it picked up than having to pay many thousands through court action because it attacked a child. To the individual who vandalized our last dog- catcher, for whatever reason—why not see if you can enrol in Kindergarten—obviously you missed something the first time around. We are in the process of finding another dog catcher. The recent nominations for positions on Town Council eliminated the need for elections. There were four position open and they were fil- led by acclamation. They are—Jan Wypch who ran for a second term, Ida Walters, Mike Ryan Pat Waldera. A reminder to all, Remembrance Day, No- vember 11th, and the ceremonies at the cenotaph, will be held as usual. Our last L.T.A. was May 25, 1982. Since then we have worked 1,174,817 manhours to the end of September without a lost time accident. We are awaiting prizes to be issued to all employees to commemorate the achievement of one million manhours without a L.T.A. Nineteen employees recently completed a Mine Rescue Course, and were tested by Mr. Jack Sutherland, the District Mines Inspector. Twenty -nine employees also completed a 24 hour Standard First Aid course offered through- out the company. An additional St. John Standard First Aid class will be available to the general public through Northern Lights College in January. Details will be announced at a later date on posters and on T.V. Handy first aid kits for your car or boat are available at the mine dry office. They cost $20 and come equipped with an instruction book. It is certainly advisable to take first aid training and have a kit at home or in the car. Also available at the mine dry office are the ‘Freedom from Smoking’ kits, a self administered program that will help the smoker who wants to quit to kick the habit in 20 days. Upon success- ful completion of this course you are issued with a second book which offers advice on how to continue as a non-smoker. Smokers are urged to stop - especially here, where the risk of lung can- cer is increased substantially amongst smokers working in asbestos. We would appreciate getting feedback from peo- ple who have tried this program. If the self admin- istered program hasn’t worked let us know. Per- haps other approaches can be tried. & e ® e e e e e e e e ® @ e e e e @ @ e e e e e e e e & OO OOOO OOOO OOOO OS OOOO OOOOH HODOOOO® B.C.
