Page 10 April 1983 Cassiar Courier MINOR Our Annual Minor Hockey Tournament was held on ut ttaseeeeeee March 10 to 13 and due to a lot of help from a lot of people was a great success. There were teams from Port Coquitlam, Faro, White- horse and Watson Lake, which totalled approximately 170 children. Billetting for this many kids is a hard job and | would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every parent in Cassiar who made room in their home. If all parents of Minor Hockey players took a billet it sure would help the billetting committee. Now, for the games — EXCITING!! Most scores were very close with both teams in the running. The Divisional Winners were: Midgets - Port Coquitlam PeeWees - Whitehorse Atoms - Whitehorse Novices - Cassiar by Ida Walters — Curling Club history was made during the recent Men‘s/Women‘s Bonspiel when the Helen Joseph rink scored an ‘‘Eight ender’’. To curlers the eight ender is the equivalent of a hole in one in golf or a grand slam home run in baseball. Proving this was more than just a stroke of luck. Helen and her rink of Rachel Becket, Marvel Knudslien and Judy Joseph went on to win the ‘A’ Event on the women’s side. Runners up were Hilda Voss, Joan Habjan, Mary Comper and Vivian Kneller. The ‘B’ Event winners were Sandy Hickman, Pat Lanphear, Carol Deyo and Juanita Nuyens. Runners up were Irene Bartell, Tish Sutherland, Joan Smith and Cassiar Courier April 1983 Page 11 Fitness on the Move ........ Having admitted the need for ‘exercise’, it is important that you understand the difference between the various kinds of exercise. Before you can design a shape-up pro- gram to meet your needs, you must evaluate what your strengths and weaknesses are. All too often we start jog- ging, swimming or working out at the gym in a flurry of enthusiasm only to let things slide six weeks later because we tried to tackle too much too fast. Cardiovascular endurance is the single most important fitness component. In order to strengthen your heart, lungs and blood vessels you need to perform some type of aerobic exercise on a regular basis. FITNESS COMPONENT Cardio- aerobic activities (with oxygen)that | approx. 70% J work up to TYPE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Muscle tone (strength and endurance) is the second im- portant fitness component. If we don’t use our muscles, they quickly weaken and are often responsible for ail- ments that could otherwise have been avoided. Fiexibility is the third fitness component. It’s import- ant to include flexibility exercises in your fitness program because you'll reduce the chance of injury while playing sports, working out at the gym or just doing your day-in, day-out chores. Optimum body weight, the weight of which fat tissue - represents no more than 15% of your total body weight is ‘also important. To the coaches for their whole weekend, to Gary Periard for the opening and closing ceremonies, to Cassiar Resources for donation to help pay for ice time, to referees and time keepers, to Rod Baerwald for scheduling of games, to the arena attendants for taking care of the ice, to the Teen Club for running the Snack Bar, to the Cafeteria for Spa- ghetti Dinners and once again to all the people of Cassiar for their support. Our Annual Banquet will be held sometime in April for our own awards and ceremonies. This brings Minor Hockey to a close for another season. It was a good one with lots to trips for our boys. Thanks again for all your support and see you next year.
