‘Over the Edge + February 22,2006 x OMe Cameron Ehl I would like to think that people would vote for me because of my huge muscles, but we all know that isn't the case. My name is Cameron Ehl and I am running for VP External Affairs. After liv- ing my whole life in Quesnel, I decided enough was enough, so I made the long and treacherous journey north, My destination: Prince George. I chose UNBC for two reasons. First, Prince ie 5 George is huge compared to Quesnel and sec- ond, I like the smaller atmosphere UNBC has to offer. During my years in Quesnel, I served.as Chair- man- of the Quesnel Secondary Graduation Committee and Head Referee of the Quesnel Youth Soccer Association. As Chairman, I got a taste of what Student Council life is like, whereas the role of Head Referee prepared me for what ‘can only be referred to as the huge dislike people have towards referees! Since moving to PG, I referee for PG Youth Soccer and can usually be seen sitting on the benches outside the Cashiers office at the university. In my spare time I enjoy jogging, cross-country and downhill skiing, and “tearing it up’ on the dance floor. UNEC has a lot to offer British Columbia. As a small university, with a smaller population of undergraduate students, the student executive should be held more accountable and open for new ideas. If I am elected VP External Affairs, I encourage all students to help me make UNBC one of the most innovative and student-friendly universities in Canada. On February 27: and 28, you have the chance to be heard; vote for Cam- eron Ehl. > AP External Nick Nagy My name is Nick Nagy and I am running for Vice President External. lam in my 4th year of my Psychology degree and since starting at UNBC I have become involved with many different organi- zations. I have been a Floor Rep in residence, I was actively involved with the International students club, and Vice President of PrideUNBC. Currently I am President of PrideUNBC, a News Be & ie ‘ = e Se ee a 2 E Peer-Counsellor in the Peer Support Network, a . member of the UNBC Asian Club, and a research assistant in the Psychology department. I also work very closely with PGPIRG, the Women's Center and the First Nation's Center on different issues affecting student at UNBC. If elected VP External I will work to increase UNBC Connection with CNC and the Prince George community, I will push to increase di- versity and representation for minority groups at UNBC, I will increase awareness of UNBC satel- lite Campuses, and.I will work closely with NTIC to increasing Transportation services on Sundays and re-open discussions on thé implementation of a U-Pass, I feel that as VP External I will be able to ef- fectively initiate positive changes within NUGSS, create stronger tepresentation for minority groups on campus, and increase awareness of NUGSS & UNBC, its programs, students, and ideals. So if you want someone who is going to work _ towards making positive changes within NUGSS, and help to make NUGSS serve you better, make sure that on February 27-28 2006 you come out and VOTE Nick Nagy for VP External. Aaron Widdis Gentleman, scholar, what more can be said about Aaron Widdis? Son of a... Hey now, let's keep it civil. Born of humble origins, in. the northern logging town of Prince George, Brit- ish Columbia, Aaron spent his first twenty-one years in his native city. In his eighteenth year he began an under- graduate degree in Biology and Chem- istry at the University of Northern British Columbia. He spent the fol- lowing year in Sweden, participating in the Educating Women for Global Management Co-op exchange and then backpacking around Europe the following semester, After his expedition in Europe, Aar- on returned to UNBC and began a de- "gree in Political Science and Econom- ics, with a minor in Women’s Studies. Over the past year he has been com- pleting his Co-op education, finishing his work term at Indian and Northern Affairs Canada in May 2005. At UNBC, Aaron has divided his time between academia, work, and ex- tra curricular activities. These include playing on the rugby team and in the squash box. He has volunteered as re- search assistant in the Political Science Program and has been a volunteer note-taker and student CSAM Repre- sentative. His tombstone will probably read “Died tragically while saving his family from the wreckage of a sinking _ ~ VP Social i i Fergil Mills My name is Fergil Mills, I'm a 3rd year biochemistry major and I would like to put my experience and cteativ- ity to work for you as the new NUGSS Vice President of Social Affairs. I was born and raised in Prince George and have spent my entire life involved in the community and its social programs both in and out of school. Through- out my time at UNBC I've also been involved in many volunteer and social organizations, and have come to know many of the students and groups who make this university great. For the past two semesters I’ve been a member of the Campus Activities Committee, and gained first-hand ex- perience in every stage of organizing and executing school social functions. I volunteered dozens of hours every month to help plan, prepare and pro- mote various events such as UNBC Idol, Exam Busters, The Battle of the Bands, The Winterfrost Ball and the upcoming Spring Carnival. I believe one of the great strengths of the UNBC student body is its diversity, and as VP Social I will work to ensure that events that are organized will be appealing and accessible to a wide range of social and cultural groups, not just a select few, To this end, I will be very attentive to suggestions and ideas from all students, and do my best to ensure enjoyable and accessible events are available for everyone. With your support I'll be able to put the skills I've learned to use as VP Social, and apply my enthusiasm and energy to the challenge or organizing more interesting and exciting events for the students of UNBC. ship.’ But what's next for this modern day hero? VP External perhaps? Now it's in your hands, the real heroes, the voters. I need to stop that, third person narrative is so arrogant and stupid, I apologize. As you’ know, my name is Aaron Widdis and when it comes to a platform I would like to keep it relatively simple. I believe NUGSS has the important role of serving the student body. I believe there should be no increase in fees (greater than infla- tién), without‘an increagé in services. NUGSS must work to expand the UNBC community and add value to the degrees we will earn. I believe I have the experience and skills required to be a successful VP External at NUGGS. Because I am currently in Vancouver and cannot campaign in person, I have created an email account at aaronwid- dis4vpexternal@hotmail.com. Please send me any questions about my cam- paign’ and I will respond as soon as possible. Please remember to come out and vote on February 27 and 28, Doug Bell Hello my name is Doug Bell and I'm running for VP External in the upcoim- ing Northern Undergraduate Student Society elections. I have been a Prince George resident for 17 years and still remember watching the opening of UNBC with excitement as a child. ~ Things seemed a lot bigger back then but the determination of many people has created one of Canada’s best uni- versities today, I am in my 3rd year of . my marketing and general business de- gree and plan on being one of the many excellent Prince George entrepreneurs in the coming years. I currently sit on the monetary affairs commission for NUGSS and have an active interest in this school and its events. I believe that I am best suited for this position because of my ability to objectively think through and listen to both sides of a situation before coming to any conclusions. I am extremely hard work- ing as well as goal oriented and will not give up on something I believe in. Though I have seen much growth this year in the communication between the. NUGSS society and UNBC. students I believe that there is still much room for growth especially on keeping the students informed and up to date on all of NUGSS activities. If I am elected as VP External I hope to excite and in- form all students and our community during the course of the next school year. Associate VP Social | Tanner Alden My name is Tanner Alden and I will be running for Associate VP Social for the 2006/2007 school year. lama 3rd year biochemistry student and you may also know me from NUGSS this _ year as the VP Social. You also may be wondering why I chose to drop my role from executive to associate, Since it is my last year at UNBC, I feel I will need more time to focus on school and what I plan to do after. As much as I would like to sit on the executive for another year, I just do not feel that I could commit my time to represent- ing the members of the society when sitting on the executive. However, by taking a smaller role in NUGSS I will "still retain a voting voice and bring my experiences from this year into the board room next year. The events that NUGSS has thrown this year have included a bachelor/bachelorette auction raising funds for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, a Halloween costume con- test, UNBC idol, Exam busters, Battle of the Bands, and in the future, Final Affair. These are events students see from year to year with small degrees of variation. New events that NUGSS offered to students this year included the first annual Winterfrost Ball and will include a Spring Carnival. The Winterfrost Ball was a formal event fundraising for a great cause (CHI- NUCS, a health initiative by stu- dents) and included live Jazz during dinner and dancing later in the night; the food was great, the live entertain- ment was fantastic, and the people were the finest around, which made this event a very gratifying success. I only hope this event will become an annual event. Another new event this year is going to be a Spring Carnival which will be taking place late March and will be utilizing the school as a venue. As for events I would like to see happen next year, well that is up to the cteativity and ambition of the new VP Social, but I will do all I can to orga- nize a cultural week or day, including as many diverse groups around cam- . pus as possible. I am a honest, hard working, mo- tivated and creative individual who will bring my experiences and respect to represent the members of the so- ciety even more efficiently in the 2006/2007 school year.
