All the time they have spent practicing has finally paid off. Consider- ing players in other communities have two games a week. Cassiar teams attending tournaments after Christmas makes it worthwhile. Much thanks belongs to the par- ents that make it possible for our children to travel the long distances necessary for games. At times this may seem inconven- ient, but it is worth it, ask any minor hockey player. Fort Nelson's Minor Hockey tournaments are set for March 9, 10 and llth for the Pee Wee's and March 16, 17 and 18th for the Novice and Atoms. Nothing was confirmed at the time of this writing but possibly the Pee Wee's will be commanding with Watson Lake for this. As-Spring break begins the weekend of the Novice/Atom tournament, it is not known whether these divisions will have enough players in town to attend. Special rates for teams have been offered by Time Air at a considerable discount. Confirmations from Watson Lake, Teslin, Whitehorse and Fort Nelson have come in with regards to our Minor Hockey Tournament March 30, 31 and April ist. 1990 in Cassiar. Billeting will be required for these teams. Cancellation Minor Hockey practice will be cancelled March 8th and 9th, due to the Blue Valley Figure ‘skating club decorating for their “Ice Carnival. rena ee _. Atoms Challenge the Ladies. Since the last issue of the Courier the Atom division of Minor Hockey has met twice with the Ladies Hockey Team. The first game ended with the Ladies winning! 5) = “3% But for the se- cond game the Atoms were prepar- ed! This game ended ina 3 - 3 tie. Our Atoms have really en- joyed these games and hope they continue now through to the end of March. But watch out Ladies, the Atoms aim to win!!! Bottle Drive The bottle drive held on January 20th went very well. Thanks to the parents and players that did attend. Unfortunately we were missing the Pee Wee- /Bantam's. Perhaps you did not realize this drive was for all divisions. Next drive you will informed. These fund raisers are only a success for Minor Hockey, if all members help out. The Pee Wee, Atom and Novice division of Cassiar Minor Hockey attended a tournament January 26, 27 and 28th in Watson Lake, Yukon. As this was not the only event happening in Watson Lake that weekend, hotel rooms were hard to find. Cassiar players, parents and coaches were spread from one end of town to the other. But when game times near- ed we could all be found at the arena. Much controversy has arisen from this tournament. Northern communities have the problem of numbers of players dwindling as they reach higher divisions. To compensate for this, two players Erom the next higher division are allowed to be brought down to the lower group. This year it was very noticeable that older play- ers dominate team play and per- haps game time is taken from the legal players in their own divi- sion. Besides wishing for more hockey players in the community, there is not much we can do about this. The majority of Cassiar Minor Hockey members do feel we have to make our teams equal to what they are playing against. Our teams placed as follows at the Watson Lake tournament: ‘Peé Wee : First place Atom : Fourth place Novice : Second place First and second place teams received medals for their achievement. Congratulations to all players, we are proud of you all!! Teams from other areas included. Whitehorse, Faro and Fort Nelson. oM.V.P medals were awarded: to a player from each team after each game.
