Championship in Smithers, 3B. C. Cassiar made a stunning victory with more than 70 points over the 2nd place team. Many weeks of intense practice paid off, as our team gave an outstanding performance featuring discipline, efficiency, know-how, and ex- cellent co-operation among all members of the team. Team mem- bers included: Gary Smith as_ as Vice Captain, Don Toth as ropeman, Wayne Mayell - First. Aid, Al Jubenville - Spare Man, Duff - First Aid Man and Mike Zemenchik - Ropeman. The team is ably coached by Kinky Borsato and John Forbes. A nice feather in Kinky’s hat for his last year as Safety Supervisor, The men, and ladies Carla Smith, Peggy Tomashewski, Car- men Jubenville and Pat Stewart were treated to a charter flight in a Twin Otter from B.C.-Yukon Airways, leaving Cassiar airport early Thursday morning. Brian and Doreen Pewsey, and Peter and Kerry Jones, were flown to Smithers in a Twin Seneca be- longing to Elvins Equipment of Whitehorse. Kinky and Bern- ice had driven down ahead of time. Thursday was spent enjoy- ing the attractive little town of Smithers. A pleasant social hour was held in Kinky’s room in the hotel, hosted by the Pewseys, Jones* and Borsatos. i Friday morning all team mem- bers were up at an ungodly hour for breakfast, then were kept away from the Competition site until their turn to perform. CASSIAR WINS MINE team captain, Brian Chandler PRT aig y a zt + COMPETITION Spectators gathered early at the site, a large gravel pit east of town, Several judges from Energy, Mines and Resources -were present. All 5 teams: Faro, Cassiar, Endako, Granisle and The rescue involved work with oxygen equipment, ropes, stret- chers, and a local ambulance. An excellent job of directing the operation was done by Gary Smith, Team Captain. Following each Mine Rescue performance there was a First Aid competition with 3 members from each team. Although Cassiar's First Aid group--con- sisting of Wayne Mayell, Lynn Duff and Al Jubenville didn’t get in on the prizes, they still made a good showing. A first ever this year was a female Mine Rescue team mem- ber, on the Endako team. Awards were presented at a dinner and dance Friday evening. Each winning team members received a trophy, and the whole team was presented with a plaque. Congratulations for Cassiar and Bell Copper, in 2nd place, poured in from mine officials, judges, local dignitaries, and other competitors, The only remaining challenge ‘was the trip home on Saturday, Many thanks to both capable pilots for bringing us safely home through some of the roughest weather we’ve experienced in small planes, Best of luck, Team at the Provincial Mine Rescue Competition in Nanaimo on June 17th, This is the big one; we’re pushing for you all the ways’ | ‘by Pat.
