Scorby’s body hung around the base
of a pile under the cannery.

After formalities had been com-
pleted with the coroner, we buried
the fisherman in the little cemetery
on the hill back of the settlement.

Some time later Mrs. Scorby
arrived with a huge granite head-
stone for the grave.

There was no motor transport at
Alert Bay in those days, and it was
a job of no mean effort to drag the
stone up the hill. I borrowed a stone
boat from the Indian school, got
some rope and half-a-dozen Indian
volunteers and we made it.

The McLeods were released after
appearing in due course before the
magistrate and paying the prescribed
fine for being drunk.

About six months later J was noti-
fied that their boat had been found
adrift and empty in Kingcome Inlet.
There was no sign of the McLeods.
On investigation I learned that the
launch had been sighted by a fisher-
man off Belle Isle Sound. He pulled
alongside to see what had happened,
and when he found no one aboard,
towed it to the nearest wharf.

The gas tank was empty, but there
was a five gallon can half full of
potent moonshine. We could only
conclude they had consumed too
much of the liquor and fallen over-
board. Their bodies were never
found. * *
