EDUCATION EXPERT ON LECTURE TOUR by Roland Rudkowsky On April 20th and 21st, Dr. Gary Philips was in town giving speeches to the Cassiar and the teachers of School District #87. Dr- Philips from Seattle and is a professional in the fields of teaching and parental guidance. His first lecture was held on April 20th for the parents of Cassiar. More than fifty people were in attendance to hear Dr. Philips speak about four simple ways to motivate a child and instil eagerness for learning. On April 2ist,, =Dr Philips an all day workshop for the of School District #87. the teachers held teachers In attendance were from Snowridge Elementary, Cassiar Secondary and Telegraph Creek. I was fortunate to have the opportunity of attending this workshop as well. Dr. Gary Philips has one basic theory, “it's not what you teach, but how you teach it." He. parents of has written a book called "63 Ways to Teach Anything", along with the sequel, "34 More Ways to Teach Anything". Dr. Philips is an outstanding speaker, his workshop was never boring. His entire workshop taught the teachers different ways to teach children using right and left brained learning techniques. He provided vast amounts of information about the brain and its function. A left-brained person relies on the left side of his brain because the left side takes information in directly and keeps it there. A right-brained person does not. really use the left brain as much as they do the right, which is imaginary things. Philips' ideas were encourage the use of the right brain in schools, instead of depending mostly on left-brained techniques, as is. case. Many students have inquired as to when they can start riding their bicycles to school. Since our bicycle racks have not yet surfaced from the snow, and since the icy and wet road conditions make bicycle riding hazard- ous for both students and the drivers trying to negoti- ate their way around them, we ask that you do not permit your children to ride their bikes to school. An announcement will be made at school when bicycles will be permitted on the school grounds. BRIAN BRETT Author Brian Brett visited Snowridge on Monday, April 17th. TWIN SCHOOLS CONCEPT You are no doubt aware of the emphasis that the provincial government is placing on ties with other Pacific Rim countries. David Lanphear's trip to China is a very good example of this. In addition, the Ministry of Education is promoting the idea of “twinning" B.C. schools with other Pac Rim schools. I'm very pleased to announce that Cassiar Secondary has been "twinned" with a school in Ratchaburi, Thailand. Given the provincial government's interest in developing ties with the Pac Rim countries, this twinning could have some very interesting possibilities.
