These are largely lands which have not been developed by the owners and which are now thrown open for settlement by the Land Settlement Board after careful examination by officials as to their suitability for agricultural purposes. It may be noted that all land within such areas is not for sale, as some Owners may decide to improve and retain their holdings. Full details in reference to these lands may be obtained from the Land Settle- ment Board itself or from the Division of Land Settlement of the Railway Company. ; Of the special land settlement areas above mentioned, No. 7 lies in the vicinity of Rose Lake, in the Cariboo District, the centre of the district being about 15 miles from the railway and served by good main and branch roads. It contains about 6,521 acres of cattle-raising and dairy-stock land. THE AUSTRALIAN FARM, CARIBOO. It has a heavy growth of natural fodders, and vegetables do well, especially where southern exposures can be found. There is a post-office here, and at 150-Mile, leading to the railway, there is a general store, hotel, post- office, bank, and Government agency. Alexandria Settlement Area (No. 8) is situated on the west side of the Fraser River, opposite Alexandria Station on the railway-line. The various parcels of land in this area are not in one compact tract, only the most favourably situated pieces being included. The soil generally is most fertile and a number of very prosperous farmers are located in the district. The soil is mostly clay, but there is sandy loam and silt on some of the lower benches. There is uniformly good growth of vegetation, with a fair percentage of vetch and peavine, and good range for cattle.
