School Advisory Committee
Meeting:

The latest meeting of the
SAC group was held last Wed-
nesday, March 7. It was attended
partly due to the inclusion of

Linda McGill and several other
Cassiarites, representing that
town's Education Action Com-
mittee. Mrs. McGill spoke about

the situation in Cassiar, and

made a plea _ for cooperation
between all towns in the school
district. :

Sherry Bradford made her

report at the same meeting and
encouraged people to attend the
upcoming Saturday board meeting.

Among other items discussed
was a presentation by Sherry
Frocklage about a program which
provides for salmon egg hatching
in the schools. More about that
later.

The Tanzilla Beer and Wine
store and South Dease services
for allowing almonds to be sold

in their establishment.

Educational Issues

The recently announced
changes in the finance formula
for public schools in B.C. have

generated a great deal of dis-
cussion. Briefly, what the
Government has done is scrap the
old Finance Formula which gene-
rated most of the money needed to
operate the school district, and
replaced it with a scheme called
Block Funding. What that pro-
vides is a specific sun of money
based on the number of students
in the District. as you may have
read in the paper, Stikine had
received about $13,000 per
student, which is the highest per
Capita grant in the Province.

The theory behind this is
that if the School District needs
more money than it is allocated,

if must go to referendum. It is
still unclear as to who would
vote in such a referendum. If

the voters vote "“yes" then the
mil rate would be increased to
generate the extra revenue. eT,

IS IMPORTANT TO MOTE THAT THERE
WILL BE NO REFERENDUM IN SCHOOL
DISTRICT #87 THIS YEAR.

A final note. Because under
the old system, 11% of the Dis-
trict's revenue had to be raised
locally, 60% of last year's money
has yet to be raised. Unless the
Government announces some sort of
tax relief in April's Throne
Speech, the local mil rate will
have to be raised in order to
complete the 1989 - 1990 expen-
ditures. The new block funding
arrangement can have no impact on
this arrangement.

Multicultural workshop: On
February 26, two speakers from
the BCTF's Pregram Against Racism
presented a workshop to the
school staff. Nora Greenway and
Charlotte Gyoba worked with the
teachers to explore the basis and
characteristics of racism in ed-
ucation and looks at ways of
dealing with it. It was a most
interesting and valuable exper-
ience.

Grade 11/12 For Dease Lake: The
Board of Trustees agreed to im-
plement a pilot project Grade 11
program in Dease Lake next year!
This is contingent on securing a
minimum number of students com-
mitted to the program April 30.
More details to come.

And Finally: A fond farewell to
a family that has lived here for
the past 14 years. Becky, Mike,
Nolan and Mason Frazier will be
missed by many. Mike and family
will be living in McBride, B.C.,
home of one of the Montreal
Canadiens most active fan clubs.
I'm sure Mike has already trans-
ferred his membership... Welcome
to: Anna Thompson, Leo, Benji
and Rosie Wilson, Lawrence,
Charlene and Ollie Henyu = and
Alicia Mroch is back in our
school.

Fitness News: Starting Wednesday
February 14, there will be a low
impact fitness class available at
the school, 6:30 to 7:30 every

Wednesday. Emphasis will be on
stretching, strengthening and
relaxation exercises.

Jazz Dance: Every Saturday, 11:00

Ballet Class: A ballet class for
children will be offered on Mon-
days, 3:00 to 4:00PM. Children
aged Kindergarten to Grade 5 are
