Special recognition awards for nursing have recently been designed and promoted by the Reg- istered Nurses Association of B.C. (R.N.A.B.C.). . These awards, in the form of plaques, are pre- sented to individual nurses con- sidered worthy of special recog- nition by their nursing co-work- ers. During a luncheon at Cassiar Hospital on May 18th, 1990; such an award was presented to an ex- ceptional nurse by her nursing peers for lengthy service in the community of Cassiar. Margaret Lilian Kamlah ob- tained a nursing diploma from the Ottawa Civic Hospital School of Nursing in 1950 and worked in Baden-Baden, Germany with the Royal Canadian Airforce, in Saskatchewan, and Surrey, B.C. She began work at Cassiar Hos- pital in 1972 and was promoted to the doctor's nurse position in 1982. It is very seldom that a nurse manages to continue prac-— ticing until retirement years, let alone work at the same hos- pital for most of her career. Her devotion to nursing and the community of Cassiar is and has been exceptional. It was with great pleasure that the nursing staff of Cassiar Hospital were able to recognize Lil with an R.N.A.B.C. recognition award for her outstanding nursing service. Hospital News Submitted by Anita Wilson, Administrator/DON You have probably noticed a few new faces at the hospital recently and that will continue for the next few months. Ethel Songhurst the X-Ray and Lab Technician who has been with us for four years has left to attend school. in Vancouver, her. replace- Cassiar Courier arrived in mid July. Carol Whiteside who was here for several years now lives in Smithers and is working in the hospital there. Cheryl Kirton was here for two months working temporary relief and Jacqueline Millar is doing the same. I would like to welcome Tammy Ellwyn who started a full ment time Registered Nurse position on July 3, 1990. Tammy comes to us from Red Deer, Alberta where she has worked for several years. Congratulations to the new trustees of the Cassiar Hospital Board. Elected at the Annual General Meeting on June 12, 1990 were Suzie Baillargeon, Jim McGill and Bill Pratt. They join Ken Buchanan, Ashley Brown (Cas- siar Mine Appointee), Werner Schneeberger (Government Appoin- tee), Sandi Sandvik and Michael Riseborough (Chairman) to com- plete the Board of Directors. In closing I would like to thank the Cassiar Lions:Club for theix generous donation of a remote control color television for the patient lounge/conference room. - This small group of indiv— iduals do a tremendous amount of work for the community, and on behalf of the Cassiar Hospital board, staff and patients a big Thank You. Parent Advisory Report Submitted by Lynda McGill The Parent Advisory Councils for Snowridge Elementary and Cas- siar Secondary held their meeting on June 20th in the library at Cassiar Secondary School. The Principals gave their reports for their respective schools. Some of the items brought forth were the staffing and curriculum in the elementary school this year and the activi- ties that had occurred at both schools during the last few months of school. The new school hours were discussed. The re- sults of the questionnaires sent home to parents regarding the proposed changes in school hours were almost two to one in favour of the change. The high school must lengthen its day this year in order to accumulate the re- quired number of classroom hours over the year. Howard Baker gave a report on this year's drama activities and future plans. There was a committee formed to look into adding some play- ground equipment at the elemen- tary school. Hopefully this will be in place this fall. It was decided that a letter will be sent home in September regarding the formation and elec- tion. of the PAC groups for the 1990-91 school year. We hope to have a good response from all our parents as a high level of inter- est is extremely beneficial to our children's education. The next PAC meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 12th ate? 30cnp.M.wines the di brany=at Snowridge Elementary School. All parents are encouraged to attend. “istered August 1990 Page 5 M yp Tan _—— ——=> ——=> ——— —= SS . There are a number of reg- nurses living in the north no longer actively nursing who could be available for full, part or even emergency on call work at the northern hospitals. They only need a refresher course to regain accreditation. The Distance Education De- partment will be offering, for the first time, a Graduate Nurse Upgrading Program this October. Students can take the course from their home community from a self- study package and travel 3 week- ends to Dawson Creek for class-— room work. Assignments and questions will be handled by a Dawson Creek instructor. Precep- torships will be arranged for the students at their closest approv- ed facility. Students will grad- vate in February, just in time for hospitals to plan for the an- nual summer holiday schedule. Graduates from this program should be valuable workers, they have their previous experience and their current training to present to a prospective employ- er. The course outline is pres-— ently being prepared for the RNABC, it must be submitted by August. We are hoping to. reach prospective students while the course still is in the planning stage in order to be able to de- velop instruction to fit students needs.
