The first night | woke up in the morning and all my stuff was scattered, First | though it was a porcupine, but then | realized that the tracks did not look like a track of a porcupine. They were enormous footprints. The 3rd night | wanted to see who was my visitor but | must have fallen asleep when the creature picked me up, | know it was the creature some old Indian told me about, “The Sasquatch”. But | didn’t believe him. Then’! know he was tall because of the way he stepped. We went far into the bush until he quit walking. Then he let me down. | peeked out and sawa hairy man. He went into a little cave and | ran home as fast as | could, | fired one shot at the big man and then I ran home 40 miles to my house. My nose tells me this spring will be different — | can smell the buds on the trees, and a hint of pine needle frangrance in the air. | think | know how people must feel, to be freed from a jail sen- tence. I’m exuberant, as | head out for a few days of outdoor living, the fantasy of bringing home a cooler of fish ever present in my mind's eye. The inside of my van is beginning to smell decent, | find it hard to believe it has taken me several months to get rid of the stale smoke odour that had permeated everything. It was quite a shock when I realized how smelly things were once my sense of smell returned. It hadn't taken very long either — my New Year's resolution had worked — at last! | had made it after so many futile attempts to quit. Who would believe it — Old Rex is a Non Smoker. My clean record is a source of considerable self satisfaction. | had always hated being dictated to and cigarettes had certainly become my master for the last few years. Now that | don’t smoke and never even miss them (with the ex- ception of thinking about having one sometimes after a big meal) 1 wonder why | hadn’t quit a lot sooner. It wasn’t that bad — | was pretty crabby for a few days, Ill admit, but quite honestly, once | made up my mind it was a lot easier than | had imagined. 1 wish to heck someone had been able to convince me sooner just how great Id feel. It’s like that being able to smell business. Sometimes now, | take a piece of clothing out of storage and it nearly blows me over, how it has retained a smokey unclean odor. ! guess | always smelled like that and never knew it. Sometimes / can pick the smell of fried onions or roast beef or apple pie be- fore | get inside the house. My nose has given me quite a lot of pleasure in the last few months. But like | was telling you, | feel good about lots of things. | feel younger and healthier, my nerves are better. | have to laugh, when | think about how often! told myself and others, that 1 smoked because | was nervous and it helped my . nerves. Now, | not only sleep like a log, | can sit still and just plain relax and enjoy doing nothing at times. I'm told I’ve stopped snoring, but then | never really believed | did..! never heard myself snore. hat is really different is waking up in the moming — no more hacking and spitting — no more jungle mouth — it no longer takes 2 cups of strong coffee and three cigarettes to put me on my feet for the day. | wake up feel- ing human. Vell anyway, as | was telling you, | just can’t wait to get out to the lake and try out this new fishing gear | just bought with the money | saved by quitting smoking. ‘ This here independence ain‘t so bad — to like it. = in fact, a guy could come Rent : SHERRY SETHAN Cassiar, B.C. 778-7564 ‘) _ STEAMEX Cassiar Courier May 1982 Page 11 Women and Pensions Date: MAY 8, 1982 (Saturday) Place: TERRACE HOTEL, TERRACE, B.C. Presently women are victims of the pension system. All areas relating to women and pensions need review and reform in order that women be given equal treatment and benefits. Both tots and teens took part and provided Cassiar with a splendid show, which was the fruit of hard work and many practice hours. Congratulations to all the skaters who received badges during the year. The Figure Skating pro did a superb job with the stu- dents this year. She certainly put in many hours of dedication and hard work and a great improvement is noticeable in the young skaters. We hope to see Lorraine back again next season. Once again the Figure Skating Club sponsored a superb spag- hetti dinner as part of the Schmoo Daze activities. A special “thank you” must be extended to all those people who donated sauce,. salad and herb: bread, and also to the cookery staff for co-operation. It should be noted that we had a great deal of non- membership support, which was greatly appreciated. Although the skating season is. over, we are still continuing with our fund-raising activities. The Bingos will continue until the Jackpot is won. Also on Saturday, May 8th, a Mother's Day Flow- er Sale will be held in the Post Office Parking Lot and will begin at 10:00 a.m. Y We would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Cassiar for supporting our fund-raising endeavors.
