Page 14 October 1981 Cassiar Courier SONOUSTER by John Sturrock Captain Ernie Awkins was commander and 33 1/3 per cent of a crew of 3 who manned a freighting inter- stellar space craft named “The Straits of Juan De Fuca’. His superb mail, freight and spatial garbage removal fran- chise extended from Earth to an ultimate destination situ- ated on the northern tip of a spiral galaxy some 3 million billion trilion space miles in outer space.: This galaxy was discovered by a Julius Klassenhopper and thus was called the Klassenhopper Galaxy and Julius had staked the galaxy and was now selling claims for it all over North America. He was right, for it was literally burst- ing with all the goodies that earth (the pulsating centre of entire space, the big room without walls) needed! Ernie's loading point was a grimy wharehouse on a star called Klassenhopper MXC3-775-20-1 under Accom: modations and Wharehousing. And it wasn’t open on Fri- days or Saturdays or Sundays and Mondays! So it seems that astronauts work only Tuesday to Thursday and thus get a long weekend every long weekend! This did not an- noy Ernie one smal! bit, because after blast.off he simply set the machine on cruise and fired up the stereo. Furthermore, a peculiarity of space travel makes it completely possible (if you maintain a velocity of 105.25 times the speed of light) for you to tend to arrive back on Earth anywhere from a day to a month before you depart- ‘ed, and you did depart! This, of course, results in speedy seniority, but it tends to fluff up the computer, which re- sults in a space type euphoria common to mill shifters! Because part of the time of duty leaves the man wonder- ing whether he is coming or going each way, ‘or is he doing both at the same time half of the time or double the time within the framework of full time! Which could mean in- sanity! The shaky coffee syndrome! The funny farm fant- asia! Flaky raindrops in your puddle type of deal! However, Ernie Awkins was not touched by this! He was completely oblivious to this! That much was plain to see and he was sat is- fied and unflappable! He considered it to be a step for-- ward when. he resigned from surface labor to take up astronauting and star garbage removal! So now we find Ernie on the butt end of a graveyard writing up the shift and posting his letters home through the government of Canada mail room wicket by the water fountain! He had cleaned the windows and mirrors, and touched up the washrooms. He issued toilet paper, soap and handtowels to the female employees washroom and the mail employees washroom. d ‘He read the barometer, thermometer, wind speed in- dicator and he had scanned the chart for cloud conditions. He had noted the speed which was at this moment 273 billion miles per hour. It had been a good shift with ssoeehirs behaving pre- dictably. So with all this done and noted in the log, he went back to:‘his comfortable seat at the controls, picked up his weightlifting magazine and began to read while he waited for his relief. His running mates were two very qualified Astros, Rowl Ringdance and Herbie Fonghammer, who, through sheer hard work became astronauts or the OSHEO’s of outer space. OSHEO’s are outer space heavy equipment operators with an air ticket, and are much in demand be- cause work in outer space depends upon conscientious, highly motivated operators who see and do without being told, and who are strong and self-reliant, and who don’t talk about the job over the sandwich table or at weddings! These men are apt to be shy and bashfull when prais- ed! So it is better to drop this subject and get on with this — heart rending adventure filled yarn. But the fact remains that no work in outer space could be done without the cheerfull assistance of these shy and bashfull, strong and reliant, conscientious and highly motivated, .see and do iron men of the pit! At this moment Rowl Ringdance entered the control Room (called Switch Bank Centre). “Hi Ernie,”’ he said. “Morning Rowl, how’d you sleep?” “Not bad,” said Rowl,. “the furnace kept me awake sf APPROACH OF AN EMERGENCY — VEHICLE ~ by Don Toth ‘@ Recently, on several occasions, other vehicles have passed the ambulance while it was in motion and displaying. its flashers and sounding its siren. TANDOORI CHICKEN 1 Chicken weighing about 3 lbs. % litre yogurt ¥% teaspoon cummin 44 teaspoon of ginger powder I teaspoon coriander Juice of 1 lime 2 teaspoons of tomato puree 4 tablespoons oil I tablespoon salt For 4 people. JALEBIS (Curly Sweetmeat) 1% teacupfuls plain flour 2 tablespoonfuls yogurt 1 teacupful warm water 1 teaspoonful saffron (Optional) 1 pint of oil or fat for frying A medium sized bakelite funnel For Symup: 2 teacups sugar 2 teacupfuls water For 18 Jalebis: Sieve the flour into a mixing bowl and by gradully adding the yogurt and water make it into a thick batter. Add the saffron and beat hard for several minutes. Let this stand overnight in a warm place. Make the syrup by boiling the sugar and water together on medium heat for 7 to 10 minutes. The syrup should be quite sticky but not stiff and be kept at tepid heat - while waiting to use. Heat the fat in a deep frying pan to nearly smoking point, then fill the bakelite funnel with the well beaten batter, remove finger and shape each Jalebi as the batter pours in the fat by moving the funnel round three or four times at one place to make a curly ring about the - _ size of a small pineable ring. Fry three or four at a time, and when golden brown on both sides, drain on a slotted spoon and dip in the syrup. When they have soaked up sufficient syrup place them in a row on a large shallow dish. Jalebis are a well-known Indian sweetmeat and can be served hot or cold. Some people like them soaked in milk. cPAirts OUR WINTER FLIGHT SCHEDULE FOR WATSON LAKE COMMENCED ON MUTTON OR LAMB CURRY WITH POTATOES : I Ib. fairly lean mutton or lamb met (ot into pieces) I medium sized onion ~ ; 3 medium sized tomatoes - 1 tablespoonful yogurt 3 1 capsicum - green pepper (Optional): 1 heaped teaspoonful turmeric: 2% teaspoonfuls salt _ 1 dessertspoonful lemon j juice % teacupful hot water % Ib. small potatoes : 1 tablespoonful clarified or melted butter af ne) ~ 2 cloves of garlic. 2 tablespoonfuls broken up coriander _.
