ARDS AM AM E CREETINGS 4 we wr BAS SRE SAB ERASER ASE ERI EERT REFLECTIONS fang, eee Ose log pe Poe BY BRENDA MALLORY As the Christmas season approaches I watch more and more people drive past our cabin. Most people are driving to Watson Lake or Whitehorse to do .some shopping or are going away for a few days holiday. As I watch I won- der how many actually drive prepared for win- ter conditions, and most certainly prepared for that long wait for assistance. Amazingly enough, I’ve met many ,a stranded motorist wearing a light jacket and summer shoes and driving a vehicle with no emergency provisions. The explanation - ‘I’ve just come - back from the South”. _ Please remember; no matter where you’ve been, winter will still come to the North. When travel- ling, have an extra blanket or two, something to . make a fire with, a few emergency food rations and, by far the most important thing - Think. Think of the problems you can have - think of how you will solve them on that blustery -40°C night - think too of how you could make your- self comfortable and safe while you wait for hours for another weary traveller to come along to help you. Think again how annoying when you find out that he.too neglected to think and is unable to help you and-the wait again begins. Merry Christmas to all of you and may the New Year smile sunshine on your home. BROWNIE NEWS The First Cassiar Brownie Pack held a very ‘special meeting on Thursday, November 16, at the Recreation Centre. This was the meeting that the ‘““Tweenies’’ had been waiting for - the day they became full fledged Brownies. For weeks the Tweenies had been busy learning the Brownie Promise and Law in preparation for their enrolment. The magical ceremony started at 7:30 p.m. ‘Each Tweenie stepped across the stepping’ stones, by candlelight, to the wishing well and then through the enchanted forest. At. the -edge of the forest they recited their law and promise to Brown Owl before being welcomed into the pack as Brownies. Following the enrol- ment ceremonies_ refreshments were served. These were provided by the Brownie mothers. The new Brownies are: - Shannon Barks, Vicki Brown, Michelle Coates, Brandy Corliss, Kate Elhorn,. Trina Harley, Bernadette Howard, Col- leen Johnson, Pamela Joan King, D. J. Loverin, Shannon Readman, and Katrina Stringer. Thank you to all the mothers who participated in this event. : The Brownie meetings will be cancelled for the Christmas holidays - the last meeting being held on November 28th. The first meeting of the New Year will be held on January 9th. Gledelig Jul og et Godt Nytaar * On November 17, 1978, Doreen Rosenau and Les Tevely were married in Cassiar. Frank Buckley performed the marriage in the Town Office, with Mr. & Mrs. Smidt-Nielsen as wit- nesses. Mr. & Mrs. Smidt Nielsen held a Scan- dinavian luncheon for the bride and groom be- fore the marriage and after the ceremony everyone left for picture-taking at Guarducci’s, then back to Smidt-Nielsen’s to cut the wed- ding cake and a glass of sherry. The couple later left for their honeymoon at their cabin at Chain Lake. The staff from the store all came to the Town Office to make sure Doreen and Les were properly married and three fellows in town had a good laugh when they tied a big bucket behind their car. Sorry fellows, but they ~ found out about it.by the time they reached ‘ Ciro’s place. MR. AND MRS. LES TEVELY Bridal Shower - On Friday, November 10, friends and fellow employees gathered to honor Doreen Rosenau at a surprise bridal shower. “6 The hall and bride’s chair were decorated in pink and* white streamers and flowers. The cold lunch was prepared by the girls from the retail store, and Sonja Slana topped the lunch off with a delicious: punch. The cake, which was made by Ola Labelle, was beautifully dec- orated as a bride and two bridesmaids. Along with her many lovely gifts went warm wishes for her future happiness in her marriage to Lesley Tevely on November 17th, 1978. Drama CS, ee) ONG to Lon os “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, a comedy in three acts, is finally into rehearsals. DENMARK 44 CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS" In Denmark the Christmas tree holds a very im- portant place in the festivities. The tree is dec- orated with stars, flags, angels, ropes and apples. On Christmas Eve everyone in the house joins hands and dances around the tree, singing their favorite songs and carols. Prepares for Christmas AFTER SCHOOL CRAFT PROGRAMME PREPARES FOR CHRISTMAS Christmas is coming and preparations are und- erway to ready the Recreation Centre for the festive season. The children in the After School Craft Programme are busy making Christmas decorations to adorn the Rec Centre Christmas tree. They have made space balls, paper chains Christmas lanterns and popcorn garlands (more popcorn was eaten than was strung)! The After School Craft Programme was start- — ed in October and takes place at the Rec Cen- tre each Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The programme is for children 6 to 12 years of age and approximately ten to twelve children attend each session. Newcom- ers are also welcome. ; 9 Ball The Annual Fireman’s Ball was held on Satur- day, December 2, at the Recreation Centre. As usual, the dance was a great success - live music being provided by Country Comfort, a group from Whitehorse. Mel Taylor took on the duties of M.C. for the evening, which began with Grace and then a toast to the Queen. An excellent buffet was provided by the Cookery and Claude Diot and his. staff deserve a special mention for their ~ superb efforts. The end result was greatly ap- preciated by everyone present. Before dancing started Mr. Brian Pewsey pre- sented the Raybestos Manhatten Award to Nada Carin. Special thanks were offered to those people who turned out to decorate the hall, to the good people behind the bar, to the Cookery staff and, last but not least, to Cassiar Asbestos Corporation, whose generous donation contrib- uted towards making the dance possible. By the time all the official business was over everyone was ready to burn off the thousands of calories they had eaten during the evening and the dancing got underway. An interesting feature was the square dance performed by those brave enough to try. Mel, you made a great caller! The music was varied, giving everyone the Op- portunity to participate in their favorite dances whether they be polkas, waltzes, or the modern girations known as dancing. It would appear _ that a good time was had by all. Oe 4 datstutetatehteiatetotefotetelstel toistetata tol
