UNBC Student Newspaper Step in the Right Direction The UNBC Football Club Destined For Success submitted by the Footbal! Club Until UNBC has an established Athletic _ Department, UNBC Football will still be referred to as a club. Not that being a club hurts them, but these kids like to be called a ream. Looking at the word TEAM, it speaks for itself: Together Everyone Achieves More. In early September it was just a dream for football club president Fouad Shalaby to have put together a team, now he works with four other executives, and the rest of the team hoping that in the near future our university will have a CIAU football team. There is also outside involvement with this team. Highly looked upon coach BarbPetrovic is also the president-elect for Prince George Minor Football. She has brought together a few bodies that are very interested in helping coach university football: one being ex-CFLer Al Reynolds who will be grinding the running backs next year. Several other ex-CFLers have expressed interest into coming up to Prince George to help coach the team. This January, UNBC Football will be sarting off early with in-class lectures about football. The team wants people that have always been interested in playing football to come check it out. Editorial 5 After about two weeks of in-class situations, the team will be found in the weight room losing Christmas fat,and solidifying their bodies. This year the team will have its inaugural spring training. By this time they should also have full equipment to play tackle ball. Finally, in September the team will be able to show off some of that up-and-coming talent in its first game. Although it won't be played against a CIAU team (just: yet!) P. G. M. F. A. is trying to set up a league in this area. The dream to play in the CIAU would happen in about three years, if all plans work well. This past year has been a success for UNBC Football. In the Turkey Tournament over Thanksgiving, the players came together as a team. Although losing all three games, they never gave up. Instead they stood tall as a respectable university team would. The team was supposed to conclude their season by playing The Keg team in a fun game, but. The Keg never showed up. The team- then organized Monster Bask '94, and Grey Cup Fever which were both great fundraising events. Also, the 50/50 draw from the Grey Cup had a portion of its proceedings forwarded to the Baby Diego Fund. Next year the team is looking to sponsor charities from the United Way, or will try “SEASONS GREETINGS FROM UNBC FOOTBALL” BACK (Left to Right): Alan Antasuda; Alain Planta; Marvin Vasques; Reg Kao (vice-Pres); Zurino Ostroman;Kirk Liefso; David Beck (Tres); Dionne Olsen; Mike MaclIntyre. Front: Fouad Shalaby (Pres); Pat Lane (Sec); Ryan Matheson (Marketing and P.R.); Jason Murphy:Art Forsyth; Peter Bruynzeel. Missing: Many Members to set up a place in Prince George for homeless teens to resort. "These kids are not only in it for themselves, they're in it for the school anf the community.. If we can work with P. R. I. D. E. (Persistence, Risk, Innovation, Determination, and Enthusiasm), we're definitely destined for success," says Shalaby. UNBC Football thanks the University, its students and staff and the community of Prince George for its continued support. Merry Christmas and a Happy New. Year to all! **Note: If anyone is interested in playing tackle ball or just helping out, we encourage females and males to- come check it out.
