atm Page 16 Cassiar Courier May 1987 MINOR HOCKEY TOURNAMENT -a great success The last weekend in March saw approximately 150 youngsters from Fort Nelson, Whitehorse, Watson Lake and Telegraph Creek converge in Cassiar to take part in our annual Minor Hockey Tournament. The tournament was successful due to the efforts of many volunteers organized for the most part by Pauline Woodrow and Margretta McGuinness. What follows is a summary of the Cassiar games, game stars, scoring and awards. NOVICE The Cassiar Novices lost their three games: Watson Lake 4-8, Whitehorse 0-16, and Fort Nelson 1-4. Game stars for Cassiar were Aaron Tripp, Dylan Thibeau-Johnston and Jody Harri- son. Scorers were : Aaron Tripp (3), David Hardy and Ricky Howard. Assists went to: Jody Harrison, Andrew Hogg, lan Hogg, Robby Howard and Christopher Woodrow.The Most Sportsmanlike Trophy went to Igor Kos while David Hardy was the Most Valuable Player on the team. ATOM The Cassiar Atoms had a 1-2 record along with the Watson Lake and Fort Nelson Atoms, but because they had the fewest goals against, played Whitehorse in the final. Cassiar’s record was a 2-6 loss to Watson Lake, a 0-4 loss to White- horse, a 4-3 win over Fort Nelson, and a 0-5 loss to Whitehorse in the final. Game stars for Cassiar were Peter McGuinness, Jayson Quinn, Andrew Smith and Kyle Zubek. Scorers were: Steven Howard, Duncan Hogg (2), Steven Vidovic, Andrew Smith and Steven McGuinness. Assists went to Duncan Hogg, Andrew Smith and Steven Howard. The Most Sportsmanlike Trophy went to Steven Vidovic, while Peter McGuinness was awarded the MVP _ Trophy. THE BEST AIRLINE IN PEE WEE Cassiar joined forces with Watson Lake to field a team coached by Troy Wanner. Due to an untimely cancellation by a Whitehorse Pee Wee team only the Cassiar-Watson and another White- horse team competed. At the end of five games both teams had identical 2-2-1 records with Whitehorse winning on the basis of 3 fewer goals against. Cassiar-Watson game stars were Cory Jamieson (WL), Jason Hardy, Billy Carter, Kyle Zubek, and Andrew Shire (WL). Scorers were Cory Jamieson, John Hardy (3), Andrew Shire (2), David Liddle (3), Brian Lund (2), Jason Hardy (2), Billy Carter, Vincent Boyes, and Shannon Joseph. Assists were given to Cory Jamieson (5), Brian Lund, David Liddle, Jason Hardy, Andrew Shire and Billy Carter. Vicky Storch was awarded the Most Sportsmanlike Trophy while Andrew Shire (WL) was awarded the MVP Trophy. JUST MINUTES TO GO IN THE BANTAM/MIDGET FINAL GAME BANTAN/MIDGET Cassiar finished with a 2-1 record and lost to Telegraph Creek in the final. Cassiar’s games were a 5-9 loss to Telegraph Creek, a 4-3 win over the Whitehorse Red team, and a 5-1 win over the Whitehorse White team. Cassiar played Telegraph to a 3-3 tie in the final but lost due to more accumulated goals against. Game stars for Cassiar were Joey George, Jim Kollar, Andy Carlick (WL), and Derek Andrews. Scorers were Joey George (6), E.J. Nuyens (2), Jim Kollar (2), Andy Carlick (4), Nevada Vance (WL) (2), and Terry Dendys (WL). — Assists went to Terry Dendys (2), Chris Hyde, Joey George (2), Andy Carlick (2), John Cavanagh, and Nevada Vance (2). James Lanteigne was Cassiar’s Most Sportsmanlike player while Derek Andrews was the Cassiar MVP. Huey Dennis was the Most Sportsmanlike player for Tele- graph while Marty Marion was their MVP. Thanks to all those volunteers who made this tournament a reality. At the risk of leaving someone's name off the list | will take the cow- ard’s way out and thank those involved with the hockey teams, canteen, billeting, officiat- ing, timekeeping and anything | may have for- gotten.
