The following is an excerpt from the letter from Mr. Paul McMuldroch, Assistant Director of School Accredit- ation/School Evaluation to Mr. Owen Corcoran, Supt. of Schools, $.D. No. 87. “The Cassiar Elementary-Secondary School has undertaken the completion of an internal evaluation dur- ing the 1981-82 school year, and it has had an External Team Report prepared on it. The central purpose of this internal work and the completion of an External Report is to provide for a systematic evaluation of the School and, through it, the improvement of school programs and operations. A review of the Internal and External Reports for Cassiar Elementary-Secondary School indicates that the school is characterized by a number of very positive feat- ures. Many complimentary comments have been made about the School's programs, operations and services in the External Evaluation Team's Report. It is noted that the Team was particularly impressed by the dedication and professionalism of Cassiar teachers. The External Evaluation Team has concurred with the major strengths as outlined in the School's internal assessment of itself. The External Evaluation Team has made many spe- cific and general suggestions and recommendations for the improvement of the School. The primary recom- mendations of the External Evaluation Team deals with facility needs at Cassiar. The External Evaluation Team agreed with the major recommendations made by the Cassiar staff and administration in their internal docu- ment on page 253. ; It is now the task of the School staff, School admin- istration, District administration and Board of School Trustees to consider the recommendations made in the Accreditation process. It is expected that most recom- mendations will be followed-up on, however, there may be some recommendations which for various reasons the School, District administration, or the Board of School Trustees will be unable to support and implement. It is the Ministry of Education’s recommendation that short and long range plans of implementation be prepared by the School and discussed with and approved by the Supt of Schools. “It is recognized that the Accreditation process is a demanding one but that it is most helpful in the develop- ment of a school’s operations, services and programs. Many teachers and others have pointed out that the pro- cess is a valuable professional experience as well. It is recognized that the Accreditation process is one of the few processes that attempts to deal with all of the vari- ables in the reality of day-to-day operation of a school. It is hoped that the Accreditation process undertaken at the Cassiar Elementary-Secondary School has been a helpful process to all those concerned with the delivery of education services to pupils. The Ministry of Education is pleased to award a four-year accreditation status to Cassiar Elementary- Secondary School. The School is asked to prepare for the Ministry of Education a follow-up report on the 1981-82 Accreditation process by June, 1984. This report should indicate the status of the External Evalua- tion Team’s recommendations as of the Spring of 1984. You are requested to discuss with the undersigned the possibility of extending the accreditation status of Cas- siar Elementary-Secondary School as per the qualifica- tion on page 40 of the External Evaluation Team’s Report.” In brief, this means that the school has received a 4- year accreditation (a very high rating!) with a possible extension of this rating to 5 or 6 years (the maximum possible) if the facilities are improved over the next 4 years. In all, a great achievement for the school, as many schools of our size in the province may not even receive a 3 year accreditation. Congratulations to staff and every- one involved in providing a top quality program for our students. Farewell - To Mr Randy Knowles, who has moved to Mac- Kenzie, B.C. to take up a teaching position there. - To Mrs. Donna Bliss, who is continuing to reside in Cassiar, but is resigning in order to help keep up the ~ ‘future school enrolment. Both teachers will be missed by staff and students. Good Luck and Good Health in your future. MISS ELIZABETH STREBEL She will be teaching Grade 5/6 and is no stranger to Cas- siar as she was one of six student teachers here on a two month practicum last spring. She comes from Campbell River, B.C. and attended school mainly in Victoria. She enjoys basketball, swimming, biking and reading and loves the mountain scenery in Cassiar. B.C. Schools Sports Draw Once again, the school will be involved in the B.C: Schools Sports Draw, which raises funds to provide many services to students involved in school sports. Some of the direct results that Cassiar students receive from this Sports Draw (which is a ticket draw with some great prizes this year) are: a) Direct return to the school of at least 50% of the ticket sales. b) Students invited and subsidized to attend sports development camps throughout the province. David Madore was selected to attend a badmin- ton camp in B.C.I.T. in Vancouver during the past summer. c) Subsidizing of teams to travel to various provin- cial sports championships (last year’s basketball teams received help in this area). Several athletic ventures are already being planned for this area so please support the students in this fund- raising draw. OPEN HOUSE Although you may not be able to attend the Open House at the School, please feel free to contact the school on your son‘s/daughter’s progress at any time. We are always looking for volunteers for the many act- ivities at the school and if you feel you can help in any way, please give us a call at 778-7367. Construction progress*on the site has been fairly steady (in spite of unfavourable weather) and something real and visible is now taking shape on the hill above the pre- sent school. At present, the school is a bit behind sched- ule due to a labour strike in the manufacturer's plant in Richmond, and this will delay the completion date. The latest anticipated completion date (depending on labour negotiations at the main plant) is somewhere between Nov. 1st and Dec. 1st, 1982. With our present enrolment and two classes (Kindergarten and Grade 4) still in the Aurora Arts/Crafts Centre, we are all eagarly looking forward to the completion before winter sets in. A MESSAGE TO PARENTS DO YOU DROP OFF OR PICK UP YOUR LITTLE ONES AT SCHOOL? If you do, please drop them or wait for them on Zimmerman or Smith Street. We would like to keep the crosswalks clear for the students’ safety, and cars and trucks which park on, or near the crosswalks become a danger factor in blocking the vision of students crossing, or the vision of oncoming drivers. This situation deteri- orated with the weather, so please assist us in making the roadway safer for your children. Parents Advisory Council MONTHLY MEETING There was:a Parent Advisory Council meeting held on September 1, 1982. Since school had not begun, there was not a great deal to be discussed. However, we did take another look at the draft copy of ‘Policies and Regulations’ fer the role of the Parent Advisory Council. Pat Riddle submitted our recommendations and changes to Mr. O. Corcoran at the School Board Office. The next Parent Advisory Council meeting will be held on October 6, 1982. Any parent or guardian wishing to make any helpful suggestions or bring up new ideas on school related matters, please feel free to contact any member of the Parent Advisory Council. They are: Alan Davies 778-7675 Pat Riddle 778-7502 Mary Elhorn 778-7452 Ida Walters 778-7792 So You Want To Be A School Trustee!! SOME POINTS FOR YOU TO CONSIDER: 1. As Trustee you will have to attend at least 8 formal meetings of the Board each year. Because of the wide-spread nature of the Stikine, 5 of these meet- ings will be outside Cassiar, so travelling time is an extra. 2. Besides the formal meetings present plans are to do much of the day-to-day board business by telephone on a conference call hookup. You will need to set a- side regular time for these calls. One Trustee will serve as the Stikine delegate to the British Columbia School Trustees Association, the. Northern Interior Branch of B.C.S.T.A., the Union Board of Health, the Northern Lights College Board, or one of the District’s Standing Committees. These duties will be spread over the entire Board, but it does make for a further time commitment.
