Pressed against the side partition, fearful lest the sound of his breathing would betray him, he waited till the purr of the drill indicated that the bandits had got over their alarm and renewed work at the safe. Edging forward he caught the dangling cord and yanked it. BANpITs Fight THEIR Way Out “Stay where you are or we'll let you have it!” His terse command echoed through the building. The dazzling blaze of white- ness picked out the astonished faces of two men kneeling beside the safe and the look- out gazing wide-eyed across the counter. With levelled automatic, Stewart filled the other doorway. “Hands up!” McDonald ordered. “Like hell!” came the snarling retort as the men dropped to the floor. A gun roared its defiance, a bullet whistling past Stewart's head and thudding into the wall. His auto- matic answered. McDonald was firing, too. In a split second the silent office had be- come a smoking inferno of flashing guns, screaming bullets, splintering glass and muf- fled curses. In a shower of cascading glass they hurtled into the darkened office of the Canada Cut Glass Company, as guns flashed. Downstairs, more shots told that McDonald was shoot- ing it out with the other bandit. A gun blazed in Stewart’s face. Again he felt the sear of hot lead. Tottering, he caught a momentary glimpse of the low-browed face with deep-set, crafty eyes. He recovered, staggered after his assailant, then darkness closed about him.
