The event will please the sens- es in more ways than one: various performers and musi- cians will be spotlighted, along with food booths and cooking demonstrations, mul- ticultural crafts, the creation of a giant collage, and a chil- dren’s corner. Many exciting performances and tables will feature a cornucopia of cul- tures from around the, globe including First Nations, Japanese, Norwegian, Ukrainian, East Indian, Filipino, Russian, Colombian, Peruvian, and Jamaican, to date. The event begins at 4 p.m., and admission is free of charge for all members of the community. Participants are welcome to mingle around the tables, admire crafts (some demos), sample various cul- tural delicacies (some with cost), watch a demonstration of Japanese-style of calligra- phy, play traditional First Nations children’s games, and many other opportunities for the whole family. Main-stage performances will begin at approximately 5:00 p.m., and the programme is packed with many exciting acts. The programme to date includes Belly Dancing, East Indian Dancing (Dimple Joshi), Koto (Japanese flute), Kimono fash- ion show, First Nations singing (with Cathy Denby), Rainbow dancers and Grandmothers of Four Winds, Yalenka Ukrainian Dancers, and a fashion show. An art display promoting diversity will also be featured in the new Bently Centre, adjoining the Multicultural Day festivi- ties. The purpose of the event is to celebrate and welcome the diversity of students, faculty and staff on our campus and in the community. This event is sponsored by the UNBC Diversity project, and has been supported by many departments on campus, including the International Centre, the First Nations Centre, International Studies department, the Student Success Centre, and the Northern Women’s Centre. “The community is invited to attend these events, which are designed to celebrate the diversity, talents, and achieve- ments of people of many cul- tures, as well as to raise the awareness of the continuing need to promote, non-vio- lence and human rights in our society, both locally and glob- ally”, organizer Sarah Boyd- Noel adds. This is an inaugural event, and the UNBC Day Planning Committee hopes to make it an ongoing tradition. So come out and try a sample of “Multicultural Day” - it should be a blast!
