OVER THE EDGE What the girlfriend Says If you feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders and nothing in your life is go- ing right I recommend watch- ing The Pursuit of Happyness; that will smarten you up. January 26, 2007 story and stars Will Smith as Chris Gardner. It also stars Will Smith’s adorable son Jaden Smith who plays Chris- topher, Chris Gardner’s son. Smith plays a man who has run out of money, is abandoned by his wife, and is forced to raise his son alone. Chris struggles to make ends meat by working as a traveling sales- ‘man selling bone density scan- ners. He searches for a new job and after much perseverance he gets a job as a stockbroker. The problem is that it is only a training program and he will not get paid until he is hired, if he is hired. This movie follows the struggles of Chris Gardner while he trains for his stock- broker position. He makes some money during his training by selling more bone density scanners, but it is not enough. The father — son pair become homeless and Chris is forced to create the illusion that he is TABATH A LUNDHOL M Two would-be warriors battle it out at the Medieval Club’s display on UNBC club’s day during the 2nd week of class. main in the training program. Will Smith and Jaden Smith work incredibly well together. The two create a drama that is very realistic and emotionally charged. The message in it is very uplifting and shows that nothing is impossible if you work hard enough. I recom- mend having an entire box of Kleenex handy when watching this film. / I give this movie four and a _ half bone density scanners out of five. What the boyfriend says What is the significance of the “Y”? The movie is called The Pursuit of Happyness and the movie guides us early on to a mural outside of a day-care which Chris Gardner (Will Smith) tries to have someone repair, The damage is a mis- spelling of the word “happy- se g | somehow that to make it into the title? Why not just call it “Thuh Purse-oot’ve Happeenuss”? Alright, there may be a con- nection that I’m missing, and please, drop a letter off to the paper here that outlines how dumb I am, but I stand. behind my dislike of the title. The movie? Oh, it was fine. The movie was actually a bit inspiring. I was expecting to be half asleep by the time the movie ended but you do ac- tually get connected into Chris Gardner’s life. The most amaz- ing part is the overlying real- ity that this is a true story. On the one hand you are inspired that someone can achieve their wildest dreams, and on the other you are shocked and sad- ‘dened that good people like Gardner must relegate their lives to the slums of society. The biggest fault I must claim this movie has is a pa- cing problem. The entire mov- ie was solid, and Jaden Smith’s knock out, yet Gardner’s life on the street takes up, it seems, a lot of the film, while the ‘ac- tion scenes’, Gardner working in the stock broker office, is al- most a sideline to the film. That is a shame as the.*poor man ° working in an office’ premise sold me on seeing the film -in the first place. The film is a worthwhile investment of the time to watch it. Forgetting the pacing issues, the entire movie car- ries you through the problems of poverty in a way unlike any other. Homelessness is given not only a voice through this film, but also a heart. It’s easy to think everyone had it com- ing, but the movie reminds you that there are diamonds in that rough. Everyone deserves a chance, and sometimes it’!l surprise you to learn who de- serves success. 3 spell checks out of 5. RESTAU} } A ANT It’s Time to Take a Break!!! And we’re just minutes away!!!
