NOVEMBER 19, 2003 Kevin Hutchings Rocks out at Artspace Popular English Professor plays benefit concert for the United Way By Steph. Morgan Romanticism it- seems lends itself to other means. Dr. Kevin Hutchings, UNBC’s resident Romantic literature specialist, was the headlining “act” for a United Way benefit held on the 7th at Cafe Voltaire in Books & Company. There were five “openers” for him which made. Kevin feel, in his own words, “like a rockstar”. Possibly because the musician of thirteen years had never had openers for him before. Books & Company was fully packed by the time Kevin got on the stage, and the audience thor- oughly appreciated the bluesy music style. Though the crowd was generally an older bunch, there was a proliferation of UNBC students skulking around the store. In fact, the majority of the crowd had to stand up because the National Défense ivi Defence nationale _ Opportunities make Les possibilités font all the difference seating was all taken. One thing that has to be mentioned at the forefront is that Kevin can play a mean harmonica, Generally the style was more focused on lighter acoustic guitar songs, though there were a few songs in minor keys floating around. Kevin mentioned after the show that he felt a little bad that he did not play more of his own songs, but he did mention that he was an entertainer first and foremost. Most notably he played a song called “The Dream Canoe” which was set in “typical” English sonnet format. He wrote it when he fell asleep in the library, though the lyrics themselves seem much dark- er than that. Mixed in with his own songs were a few humorous and well known classics - Monty Python is a must for any concert it seems - as well as one that was written by Dr. Lisa Dickson, Kevin’s wife, who was in attendance. Mixed between the songs were stories that some of his students may have easily recog- nized. He also added a few more interesting ~developments, like a Jamaican song “Sex and Scandal in the Family” (believe me the night was worth it just to hear Kevin sing in a Jamaican accent) and though the night was over very — quickly everyone seemed to have enjoyed the show immensely. The benefit itself made around $154. Kevin mentioned that he was hoping to make this an annual event. At the orphanage the sisters need $1000 per child each year, and there are twenty children in their care.
