But not Constable Cash- man. “I’ll always believe those two men had complete knowledge of what they were doing,” he said. “They simply lusted for blood, and used the superstitious fears of their people to cover the wantonness of their crimes.” In solemn silence the chief heard Kirkness interpret the judge’s words that doomed him to die a dog’s death at the end of a hangman’s rope, which would forever bar his spirit from the Happy Hunting Grounds. ... And, that night, was on his way across Lake Winnipeg to the Stone House of the whites. But the Minister of Justice decided to temper justice with mercy, and the execution was never carried out. In- stead, three years later, Mistainni- new’s emaciated body was found life- less on his prison cot by a warden. The chief's soul had fled the grey walls of Stony Mountain Penitentiary for the Happy Hunting Grounds of the Saulteaux. And, with the passing of Mistainni- new and his brother the aboriginal rule of the pagan witch doctors was forever broken throughout the forests of Keewatin. Do you know the rules of the road? Failure to know them may cost you money—or your life—if you drive an automobile, according to the Na- tional Safety Council. For that reason, the Council is sponsoring a national campaign on the theme, “Know and Obey Traffic Laws.” Here are three rules of the road which the Council believes are com- monly misunderstood by motorists. Even if you are lucky enough to escape injury yourself, you may be liable under the law for damage to other vehicles or persons. The Intersection Rule: If two cars arrive at an intersection without stop signs or signals at about the same time, the car on the right always has the right-of-way. You must give way to it. The Following Rule: If you run into the rear of another car, you always are at fault. It doesn’t matter that the car ahead stopped suddenly or that the driver failed to signal— he may have had no opportunity. The law requires that you drive far enough behind to be ready for any emergency. Safety authorities recom- mend one car length for every 10 miles of speed. The Speed Rule: In all states speed must be adjusted to conditions regardless of posted speed limits. A speed limit of 30, for example, means that is the maximum safe speed under ideal conditions. If traffic is heavy or if the roadway is slippery, 30 miles an hour may be too fast for safety. If you have an accident, you may be charged with “speed too fast for con- ditions” even though you did not exceed the legal limit. On rural high- ways without speed limits, the “reason- able and prudent” rule still ap- plies. *k o* CHILDREN scrambled for choco- late cartons scattered by a bull which charged into a confectioner’s window in Stirling, Scotland. Alas, the cartons were all dummies. MARSHALL BROS. SPORTING GOODS HUNTING — FISHING SUPPLIES BOATS — GUIDES For Information Phone 119 CAMPBELL RIVER B.C. THE SHOULDER STRAP
